There are important differences to consider when choosing between the Amex Platinum and the Amex Business Platinum. The personal card and the business card were both refreshed in October 2020.

Redemption values

One of the most valuable loyalty currencies is American Express Membership rewards. The Amex points are worth 2 cents per point. Membership rewards points can be used to travel to many places in the world.

One benefit exclusive to the Business Platinum card is that when you book any flight directly with points through Amex Travel on your preselected airline, you will receive a 35% rebate of the points you used.

If you don't have flexible travel dates, this is useful. You must have the full amount of points in your account in order to book. If you find a good deal on a flight, you may end up using less points than if you transfer to an airline. Do you always compare your options?

You should try to get at least 2 cents per point when booking award flights or nights with one of the program's airline or hotel partners. You can expect to get more value out of these points if you book a business class or first class flight.

The winner was a tie.

When to transfer and when to pay with points are related.

A case for the Amex Platinum

If you don't have a business and don't want to spend a lot of money, the personal Amex Platinum is the card for you.

The personal Platinum has 13 perks, six of which are not offered by the Amex Business Platinum. All of those credits add up to over a thousand dollars and help take the sting out of the card's yearly fee.

When you book airfare and get 5 points per dollar with the card, it's even better. You can add up to three authorized users to your Amex Platinum for a fee of $175 per year, then $175 per authorized user after that.

If you spend $6,000 in the first six months of cardmembership, you'll get a 100,000 point welcome offer on the Amex Platinum card.

A case for the Business Platinum

The decision isn't easy for small business owners. After spending a total of $15,000 in the first three months, the Business Platinum card has a welcome offer of 120,000 points. If you can meet the spending requirements, you will get more bonus points.

The personal version of the Business Platinum Card doesn't have any of the benefits that the business version does. The annual fee isn't cheap, but the benefits and annual credits offset most of the fee on either card, making them a good choice for frequent travelers.

There are different answers to what the business card requirements are. People are surprised that they qualify for a small business credit card. The process for applying for an Amex business card will be the same as applying for a personal credit card, but there will be more steps. Providing contact information for your business, its nature, spending habits and how long it has been operating are some of the things that are included. A guide on who is eligible for an Amex Business Platinum card can be found here.

Bottom line

The American Express Platinum cards are popular among those looking for premium perks. At home and on the road, both cards offer many perks. Lounge access, travel protections, and valuable points are just a few of the features.

The annual fee is the same for both cards. One card is more suited to your lifestyle and travel goals. If you understand the similarities and differences of the cards, you can make an informed decision on which card to apply for.

It makes sense for some card members to have both in their wallet. A small business owner who wants to maximize travel for both business and pleasure can hold both cards. Make sure you spend your money in a way that makes your annual fees worth it. The cards come with a lot of fees.
