Phil Manzanera is on tour with his band, which is celebrating the 50th anniversary of their debut album. Manzanera's solo career has included experimental rock, prog rock and Latin music and he has continued to do so even after he left Roxy. He has collaborated with a number of famous musicians. His riffs were also used in the song "No Church in the Wild".

Manzanera worked as a record producer for the New Zealand rock band Split Enz. Split Enz opened for a tour of Australia in 1975. It was the beginning of a friendship between Manzanera and Finn that continues to this day. The Ghost of Santiago is a dreamy, atmospheric, evocative and romantic work that draws from a wide range of music.

The Finn and Manzanera albums show Finn's warm intimate vocals and Manzanera's dazzling guitar playing with sumptuous arrangements and production. The history of Manzanera and Finn's recent collaboration can be traced back to when Roxy Music were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Stevie Nicks received her award that night. Neil Finn, of Split Enz and Tim's brother, was substituting for Lindsey Buckingham at one point in time.

He goes on to say that he bumped into Neil. I sent the picture I took with him to Tim in New Zealand. I wanted to know who I bumped into in New York. He said, "Great." Do you want to play guitar on some of the tracks Eddie and I are doing? I agreed. The year before that was the previous one. They had a project called Forenzics that came out this year. When we were locked down, he sent me an email asking if I had any Latin grooves. I told him to go to the right place.

The two musicians collaborated on about 25 songs, with 10 of them appearing on Caught by the Heart and the other 10 on The Ghost of Santiago. Manzanera thinks that the Finn brothers have it. Some of the most beautiful songs have been written by them. Tim has worked on my solo albums over the years and I was very happy to be working with him. A part of a family.

The Latin influence on The Ghost of Santiago dominates the album, which is natural in Manzanera's case, since he was born to a British and a Latin mother. Finn sounds like a singer from Brazil or Chile on some of the tracks on the album.

Isn't it amazing? Manzanera said of Finn's Spanish-language delivery. He sings in French on the Forensics album. We haven't put out a song that he sings in Italian. Singers like to sing in other languages because they don't really understand words. He's done a great job. I'm bilingual and there's no way I wouldn't let that happen.

Manzanera is currently on the road and will return to the U.K. for a few shows. Is there a chance that he and Finn could perform the songs from Caught by the Heart and The Ghost of Santiago live? Manzanera says that you don't know because of conclusive evidence. It would be great if we were able to.
