The Nittany Lions were unaware of Powers' true identity even though head coach James Franklin was in on the joke.
When Manning picked up the pigskin and sprayed it all over the field, things changed.

Manning played college football for Ole Miss and went on to play for the New York Giants in the National Football League.
Manning won two Super Bowls and two Super Bowl Most Valuable Player awards, as well as setting multiple team records, while he was with the Giants.
Manning will not be playing for Penn State.
Powers didn't make the team because his numbers weren't good enough and he was ineligible because he was Manning, according to coach Franklin.
Manning told the team that he appreciated working with them. Y'all did well.
