Zdeno Chara is retiring from the NHL after captaining the Boston Bruins to their sixth Stanley Cup.
After 24 seasons with the New York Islanders, the 45 year old will return to the team in the 2020-21 season. In his final NHL season, Chara scored twice and had 14 points while playing nearly 19 minutes a game.
Zdeno Chara, who was the tallest player in NHL history at 6-foot-9, made his official announcement on his social media accounts. He said in the post that he signed a one day contract to retire as a Bruin.

Zdeno Chara is going to sign a one-day contract with the Boston Bruins in order to finish his career with the team that has meant so much to him.
After playing for the Islanders and Senators, Chara joined the Bruins for the 2006 season. Just a few months after signing with the Bruins, Chara was named captain. He became the first Slovakian to captain an NHL team.
One of the highlights of Chara's career was his time with the Bruins.
During his time in Boston, he emerged as a leader in the NHL. The 2008 season was Chara's best. He averaged more than 26 minutes in 80 games. He finished in the top eight in Hart Trophy voting.
In the 2010-11 season, Chara played a key role in the Bruins winning the Stanley Cup and earning their first title in 39 years.
The Mark Messier Leadership Award was won by Chara that year.
In 1,023 games with the club, Chara scored 481 points.
The 43-year-old signed with the Caps as a 43-year-old. After spending 55 games with the Caps, Chara signed with the Islanders, who drafted in the third round in 1996.
What he did beyond the NHL had an impact on his career. He guided Slovakia to second place at the World Cup of Hockey in 2016 and to two silver medals at the IIHF Men's World Championships.
