An executive said in a memo that the first broadcast of "Thursday Night Football" attracted a record number of new Prime signups over a three-hour period, more than during similar periods on Prime Day or other big shopping days.
The first of 15 football games will be broadcast by Amazon as part of a deal with the National Football League. CNBC reported that Amazon is spending $1 billion a year to exclusively stream Thursday Night Football.
In a memo to staff, Jay Marine, global head of Amazon's sports division, wrote that Thursday Night Football was a resounding success.
The numbers for the game haven't been released by the company. According to Marine, the audience numbers exceeded all of their expectations.
Amazon hopes to increase its Prime membership by betting on sports broadcasting. The Prime program, which costs $139 per year, has 200 million subscribers. There are 80 million Prime Video households in the United States.
It has beefed up its Prime Video content in other ways to get more people to subscribe. The company has a new series called The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. The first episode of the series attracted over 25 million viewers on its first day, making it the most watched episode of all time.
There have been ratings gains for the first week of the football season.
