The man who popularized the term "metaverse" is taking a break from writing to build his own.
"Snow Crash" author and cyberpunk pioneer Neal Stephenson is trying to create an open metaverse platform that will be a more decentralized version of the types of Big Tech metaverses that exist.
Rony Abovitz, who is also acting as a strategic advisor to Lamina1, said that it was like Neal was coming down out of the mountains to restore the metaverse.
The science fiction titan was initially concerned that he wasKardashian-ing, or profiting from his own self-created hype.
The first question could be that. Neal is selling his brand to a company.
Vessenes said that once people speak with the Lamina1 pair, they conclude this is a principled effort and begin asking how they plan to do it. It seems that the answer will be found along the way.
The economics are tied to adoption. The more people use it, the more it's worth.
Execution may be a point of contention. The project to create an incredibly ambitious swordfighting game called "Clang", complete with its own new motion capture hardware, broke down the next year after raising $500,000.
A new project similar to the unified internet is being described. It sounds like it's more ambitious than "Clang."
It's possible that resources are also thin. The company only employs three engineers and plans to hire many more as they build out their tech, according to a report.
"When the calendar turns over to 2023, it's going to be back to the usual," said the cyberpunk king, adding to the stakes.
He said his publisher would send a hit man after him if he didn't fulfill his obligations.
Neal Stephenson was named the metaverse. He's building it now.
