  • I was shown why people love Musk's cars.

  • The Model Y SUV isn't for everyone.

  • It's a good idea to look at other models if you need a comfortable ride and simple controls.

I drove a car for the first time recently and I'm starting to understand why Musk's cars are so popular.

The company's cars are sporty, spacious, packed with interesting tech, and simple to charge through the company's exclusive Supercharging network, as well as benefiting from a decade-plus head start on other cars. They are a great choice in the EV space.

My day with a friend's Model Y SUV taught me that there's more to it than meets the eye. I had to find a way to get around the fact thatTesla doesn't lend out cars to reporters.

Bumpy ride

The Model Y's suspension is firm but not without sacrifice. If you drive down any road that isn't perfect, you'll see cracks and bumps. The Model Y is not one of the vehicles that are built to absorb road imperfections.

The ride quality may be better on models with the standard 19-inch wheels.

All-digital interface

The Model Y has an iPad-like, 15-inch touch screen. It's quick and responsive, with impressive graphics and fun features, but it doesn't replace the knobs and switches that drivers are used to.

The Model Y has many functions like door locks, windshield wipers, headlights, climate controls, and mirror adjustments. The learning curve may be too steep for some owners.

Many functions can be accessed using voice commands.

Lacks Apple CarPlay and Android Auto

Some of the most basic and widespread tech features on the market are missing from the Model Y. If you're used to using your phone while driving, you'll have to use the built in navigation and music apps.

No gauge cluster

The strangest thing about hopping into a car for the first time was seeing nothing. The Model Y's all-powerful touchscreen displays all the important driving info in a gauge cluster behind the steering wheel.

To check your speed, cruise-control settings, battery level, and turn-by-turn directions, you need to look sideways. The Model Y could benefit from a driver-facing display like the ones found in most competing electric cars.

Rear visibility

The Model Y has a slanted roof that makes it hard to see. A lot of new SUVs have the same shape.

Prices keep rising

The price of a new car has gone up due to the shortage of semiconductors and rising raw materials prices. Over the last year or so, the price ofTesla has been out of control.

The cheapest Model Y was eliminated in early 2021. The price of the new base version has gone up from $50,000 to $66,000.

Electric SUVs can be had for between $40,000 and $50,000, but the Y provides a lot of range and capability. Musk admits that the prices of his company are not good.
