The outcome of Barrack's trial could shed light on how foreign nations sought to cement influence within the Trump Administration, as well as how the DOJ is ramping up its prosecution of undisclosed foreign lobbying. According to reports, Barrack convinced Trump to hire him for the presidency. Manafort pleaded guilty to criminal charges related to his political consulting work in Ukraine as part of a plea deal with the special counsel.

According to the New York Times, Barrack held a unique place in the Trump world, as evidenced by the fact that he opened communications between the 2016 Trump campaign and the Emiratis.

Why is Tom Barrack on trial?

Between April 2016 and April 2018, Barrack, along with his assistant Matthew Grimes, and the official of the U.S. embassy in the U.S., were indicted by the DOJ for conspiring to act as agents of the U.S. According to the indictment, Barrack was charged with obstruction of justice after making false statements to law enforcement. According to the Los Angeles Times, Barrack was briefly arrested in July of 2021.

The two men have pleaded not guilty to all the charges. Barrack is accused of lying to federal officials and being an agent of a foreign government. He is being accused of being an agent of a foreign government.
