If you want to redeem Marriott points for award nights, you should not have to pay money. Some Marriott Bonvoy app users are being asked to pay an extra fee when booking a hotel room.

This shouldn't be happening, but the good news is that there is a way to avoid it. The Marriott Bonvoy app has points redemption fees that can be avoided.

Marriott Bonvoy app points redemption fees

The fees are not showing up on award redemptions. The silver lining is that.

You may be asked to pay an additional fee if you use your points for a redemption stay at Marriott properties. The fees are based on the property, dates and room type.

Users are asked to pay $55 in order to redeem their points for a two-night stay at the Aloft in Oklahoma. The redemption requires 17,000 Marriott Bonvoy points. This isn't a points + cash stay, it's a "Redemption," which means it's not a points + cash stay. Cash should not be required for this booking.

There are many examples. There were surcharge on award redemptions at the Marriott Mena House Cairo and the Marriott San Francisco.

These are not resort fees or points, which is why we believe this is a bug on Marriott's app. We should expect an update in the coming days after Marriott said that it is looking into the matter. This post will be updated when the bug is fixed.

Bottom line

The positive aspect of this news is that you can easily avoid them if you book online through Marriott's website.

You can still use the app to find hotels if you prefer. If there are unexpected fees in the app when you confirm your reservation, be careful. If you see them, you should be able to use your points without paying the extra fee.
