49ers' Trey Lance Expected to Be Ready for 2023 Season After Surgery on Ankle Injury

Lance underwent surgery on his ankle on Sunday and will be ready to play for the 49ers in three years.

He underwent successful surgery, the team said.

Lance, who was trying to establish himself as the franchise quarterback, was carted off the field with an air cast on his leg.

It was a significant ankle injury that is expected to require surgery that likely will end his season, according to Adam.

Lance was given the keys to the offense by the 49ers after backing up Jimmy Garoppolo in his first season. He struggled in a Week 1 loss to the Chicago Bears, going 13-of-28 passing for 164 yards, zero touchdown and one pick-six.

It was shocking that San Francisco decided to keep Garoppolo, even though it was widely assumed he would be moved after the team chose Lance.

Garoppolo is a veteran game-manager who knows how to win. He had a 33-14 career record as a starter and helped the 49ers win the Super Bowl last season.

The hope is that he can win in place of Lance.
