Emoni Bates, a former high school star who transferred from Memphis to Eastern Michigan this summer, was arrested Sunday night after sheriff's deputies discovered a firearm in a vehicle he was driving.
The public information officer for the Superior Township, Washtenaw County sheriff's office said that officers initiated a traffic stop of a vehicle which failed to stop.
The charges of carrying a concealed weapon and altering ID marks were brought against him. His lawyer asked for a not guilty plea to be entered on his behalf.
The judge agreed to a non-monetary personal recognizance bond for the man to be released from jail. There is a court date in October.
According to Haney, the arrest came after a traffic stop when he was driving a car that had a gun. "Don't make a decision on this at this time," Haney said. There's more to come. A gun was found in the car that he borrowed from someone.
He was considered one of the best basketball players in the country during his high school career, but he reclassified last summer and ended up in the top three.
He initially committed to Michigan State in the summer of 2020 before changing his mind and committing to Memphis.
His season was not perfect. He missed 15 of 33 games because of a back injury and he struggled on the floor.
The former Tiger averaged 9.7 points and 3.3 rebound per game.
