One man was killed in the storm. No deaths have been reported so far in Puerto Rico, but the full scope of damage is not known. The Associated Press reported that hundreds of people were evacuated from the most vulnerable areas.
The eye of the storm is over the Dominican Republic. The US territory of Puerto Rico is still under a tropical storm warning. The south and western parts of the island are under a flash flood warning.
There is flash flooding in the area. The current situation will only get worse with heavy rain. The San Juan NWS urged people to move to higher ground immediately.
There are still wind gusts in the south. The winds peaked at 80 mph.
The ongoing flash floods could be life threatening, according to the NWS. Some areas have already been hit by large slides.
Large swathes of the south and east received between 12 and 16 inches of rain. There is a chance that several more inches are on the way.
The anniversary of Hurricane Maria, which killed thousands of people, is just two days away. The island lost power for the longest time in U.S. history, due to Maria. LUMA took over the island's electricity transmission and distribution in 2021.
There have been recurring issues since LUMA took over. The electric company was sued by four food corporations after a four-day power cut. Puerto Ricans took to the streets to protest a 15-year contract with LUMA.
The entire island was without power on Sunday. The time is 7 a.m. LUMA said it had restored electricity to around 100,000 customers. Full power restoration could take several days according to the company.
There is a Category 1 storm over the Dominican Republic. Slow moving storms can lead to larger total rainfall over a single area and cause infrastructure damage and danger.
The storm is expected to strengthen to a Category 2 before making a direct hit on Turks and Caicos. The storm is expected to intensify into a Category 3 Hurricane on Wednesday. Although it is projected to stay off the Atlantic coast of the continental U.S., it is expected to hit Nova Scotia and Newfoundland in Canada.
