Putin says Russia's not responsible for the EU's energy crisis — it just needs to 'push the button' on the Nord Stream 2 pipeline to get more natural gas

Putin denied that Russia was responsible for Europe's energy crisis and said that the EU could simply turn on the newNord Stream 2 line if it wanted more natural gas from his country.

If you have an urge to do it, just push the button and everything will get going, said Putin after the summit.

He criticized the EU's renewable energy push, saying it started the energy crisis.

The Nord Stream 2 is a natural-gas line that runs parallel to the first one. Russia's gas flows to Europe will be doubled by the completion of the $11 billionNord Stream 2.

40% of Europe's natural gas comes from Russia and the EU is facing an energy crisis this winter. More than one-third of the fuel that Russia exported to Europe came from theNord Stream 1 line.

Russia's gas giant, Gazprom, turned off gas supplies to Europe in September.

The benchmark European natural-gas future has doubled in the past year.
