Boom Supersonic's Overture flying above clouds.
  • According to FlightGlobal, engine manufacturers don't want to help Boom build a powerplant.

  • Rolls-Royce ended its contract with Boom in the middle of September.

It's possible that Boom Supersonic will have to make its own engine.

Rolls-Royce signed an engagement agreement with Boom to explore an engine that could power the faster-than-sound Overture, which already has orders from United and American Airlines.

Rolls-Royce told AIN Online that it has left the table.

Rolls-Royce delivered engineering studies for the Overture supersonic program.

"After careful consideration, Rolls-Royce has decided that the commercial aviation supersonic market is not a priority for us and, therefore, will not pursue further work on the program at this time," the company said. We wish the Boom team the best of luck in the future.

After Rolls-Royce said that they were interested in making a supersonic engine for Boom, other companies said they weren't interested.

Aerion, which was backed by Boeing, closed its doors in May 2021, due to financial challenges, after GE worked on the engine that was being developed to power a supersonic jet. Civil supersonic is not a segment that the company is pursuing.

One of the companies capable of making such an engine is hesitant to do so.

It's hard for Boom to find an engine manufacturer and make a power plant that is green. The company wants its jets to run on sustainable aviation fuel.

Boom told Insider that they don't comment on any ongoing negotiations until both sides are ready to announce. We will announce Boom's chosen engine partner and transformational approach later this year.

Henry Harteveldt, president of Atmosphere Research Group, told Insider that the company might need to make its own.

"Boom wants its aircraft to be as eco-friendly as it can be, which is a noble and critically important objective, but it is already hard enough and expensive for Boom to build the airplane," he said. It will be a challenge if they took on the engine.

He said that Boom will have to make sure that its engine does not violate other people's intellectual property.

It doesn't mean Boom can't do this, but they will need to raise additional funds or bring in a partner or two to help If it succeeds in building the jet and the engine, they will get their aircraft and have a business advantage because they won't rely on a third-party engine maker.

If Boom succeeds in building both, it could become an attractive acquisition target for companies such as Boeing.

It could sell its powerplant design to an engine maker and make a profit on it.
