Alan Shearer column

It's not time to talk about them as a title contender yet, but people know that this is a different team to the one we saw last year.

We all remember what happened in this fixture on the opening weekend of last season, when the Bees didn't just beat them, they bullied them, and that's why Sunday's win was so important.

In attack and defence, as well as the way they controlled the game, and with their attitude and intensity, everything was different about the team. They won comfortably.

Part of that was due to how bad the Bees were, but it was also due to how poorly the Gunners played.

I was expecting to see a repeat of the last time they played, when they tried to hurtArsenal. They tried to play that way again but they faced a different team.

Then? With Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette absent with Covid, Folarin Balogun led the line on his first Premier League start for Arsenal when they lost 2-0 to Brentford in the Bees' first game back in the top flight last season. Balogun is now on loan at French side Reims

The side is bigger and more committed than ever before. They dominated from the beginning and were better than everyone else.

The Bees got no joy when they attacked with long throws or crosses into the box, like they did at the previous game.

The two strikers, Ivan Toney and Bryan Mbeumo, didn't get a kick because they were dominated by Gabriel and William.

They could not get near the second and third goals because they were given too much time and space.

Now? Arsenal have won six of their first seven league games this season. As well as Balogun, four other players who started their last visit to Brentford have left either permanently or on loan - Bernd Leno, Calum Chambers, Pablo Mari and Nicolas Pepe. Aubameyang and Lacazette have also departed

Arteta has transformed the mood of the club

Four of the players who started the defeat against Brentford started the game on Sunday.

Arteta has changed the mood of the entire club in just over a year.

He got a lot of criticism after they started last season with three straight losses.

They went into the international break at the top of the table after winning six out of seven games. They are also deserving of it.

The Gunners were ninth after seven games last season. They have only dropped points once in 2021-22, in their defeat at Manchester United on 4 September

It's been a weird start to the season for some of the big clubs, with the exception ofLiverpool, who are nowhere near what we know they can be.

After their change of manager, they have had more turmoil.

Even though Manchester United made a poor start, they have recovered well and are currently in second place behind Manchester City.

I think the main goal of the club is to return to the top four for the first time in two years.

Their next two league games at the start of October will tell us if they can sustain this strong start but, right now, their fans are enjoying what they are seeing.

Jesus shines while Toney struggles

Mikel Arteta 'really pleased' with Arsenal performance

This was a game to forget for Toney, who had an exciting week after being called up to the England squad.

It was one of those days where Toney had to hold his hands up and say the opposition centre-halves were better than he was because he lost most of his aerial battles.

He is going away with England for the next 10 days or so and I am sure he will be back to normal in no time. It is a good chance for him to impress if he gets on against either Italy or Germany.

Gabriel Jesus heads home Arsenal's second goal
Jesus headed home Arsenal's second goal from a Xhaka cross

There was only one person who stood out for me at the stadium.

Since joining from Manchester City, Gabriel Jesus has four goals and three assists and has been involved in more goals than any other player in the league.

We've seen Arteta improve the likes of Xhaka, but Jesus is the real game-changing player for me.

His move was seen as his chance to be the main man after he was often on the bench.

It's not just Jesus' goals and creativity that make him so important to them, it's his relentless energy and willingness to run in behind defenders too.

Alan Shearer was talking to someone.
