Scorecard

Smriti Mandhana hit a match-winning 91 as India beat England by seven runs in the first one-day international.

India was able to reach their target of 228 with 34 balls to spare, thanks to the captain.

England's young bowlers struggled, with Kate Cross taking 2-43 but not much else.

England fell to 94-5 before Alice Davidson- Richards' 50 helped them post 227-7.

India, despite being inconsistent in the Twenty20 series, put in an assured all-round performance and capitalized on their hosts' inexperience.

Veteran seamer Jhulan Goswami gave up just 20 runs and took a single strike from her 10 overs.

England needed their remaining senior players to step up in the absence of injured captain Heather Knight and NatSciver, but stand-in skipper Amy Jones and opener Tammy Beaumont made just 10 runs between them.

In reply, India lost Shafali Verma early but Mandhana and Bhatia, who survived two dropped chances, added 96 for the secondwicket before Harmanpreet kept her side on track and finished the match with a six.

The second one-dayer will be held at Canterbury on Wednesday.

Batting inexperience shows for England

England had a similar team in a T20 series in which India struggled.

For the first time this summer, England's batters were tested by disciplined and consistent bowling.

England fell to 26-2 after the powerplay after Goswami gave nothing away.

England were undone by some poor shots but were also put under pressure by a much improved fielding display by India, exemplified by the stunning diving catch to remove Alice Capsey, making her One Day International debut.

Davidson-Richards, playing in just her third one-dayer, led England's recovery from 1286 and added crucial lower-order runs.

India made easy work of their chase.

Mandhana leads the way for composed India

With the ball, England's inexperience was even more obvious.

England's seamers struggled for consistency without the rested Brunt andSciver.

Cross was the leader of the attack but lacked support from Issy Wong and Davidson-Richards.

The hosts didn't fare well in the field. Harleen Deol was put down by Wong and Jones as well.

She scored all over the ground and Jones' inexperience as captain was stark.
