You don't have to be a superhero.

At least 25 percent more than analysts had expected, Sony Pictures Entertainment's original war drama " The Woman King" earned $19 million in ticket sales over the weekend, more than any other film. Since Clint Eastwood's "Sully" in 2016 it was the best September opening for a similar film.

The woman king is a film directed by Gina Prince- Bythewood and written by Dana Stevens. There was a call for a boycott of social media after the trailer and other materials for the film were seen. The woman king got rapturous reviews. The movie received an A-plus grade in CinemaScore exit polls, which bode well for word of mouth.

Box office analysts said that "The Woman King" could generate in the vicinity of $100 million in the United States and Canada with little competition for older ticket buyers. The films play to healthy multiples during their holdover weeks.

Sony and eOne joined forces to pay for the film, which cost $50 million to make.

More than half of the audience for "The Woman King" were over the age of 35. White ticket buyers were the second- largest group, with 59 percent of the audience being black.

The R-rated " Barbarian" (from 20th Century Studios, a Disney division) was second at the domestic box office over the weekend, with about $6.3 million in ticket sales, for a two week total of $20.9 million. The low-budget horror film "Pearl" collected $3.1 million.
