According to the Wall Street Journal, some hosts on the platform are requiring guests to complete lengthy chore lists in order to pay cleaning fees.

Travelers are pushing back on social media, saying they have been asked to take out the trash, wash the sheets, and even mow the lawn.

A TikToker named Melworeit said in a video that she decided not to book onAirbnb because it charged a $125 cleaning fee and asked guests to take out the garbage.

The post had 66,000 views and 5000 comments.

The TikToker said he wouldn't do any laundry if he had to pay $229 a night to stay in a place. The principle that really bothered me was that it would take me two minutes to do it.

A guest on the platform asked if it was normal for a host to tell them to mow the lawn.

"Seems like a strange response, but if that's standard then I'll roll with it," the user wrote. If I don't do it, I don't want to be charged for it.

While hosts choose their own cleaning fees, the company has suggestions for keeping the amount reasonable and suggests not charging cleaning fees at all. 45% of global listings don't charge a cleaning fee, and for those that do, the fee is less than 10% of the total reservation cost, according to the company.

Do you want guests to put dirty dishes in the dishwasher or strip the bed linen before checkout? If that's the case, consider charging a very minimal cleaning fee or no fee at all. Guests will walk away from your space at checkout if you charge them a higher fee.

Kimanzi Constable, a full-time digital nomad who has stayed in over 100Airbnbs, told Insider that some hosts have asked him to complete chores without basic cleaning and laundry supplies.

I've been asked to clean up, take out the garbage, and do other things to help the host, even though I pay a high cleaning fee. If I have the supplies needed, I'm more than happy to lend a hand. "Hosts should either provide all the necessary items or scrap the cleaning fee completely."
