The UCLA Bruins defeated the South Alabama Jaguars 32-31 on Saturday at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California, with a last-minute field goal, but there was a lack of fans in the stands.
Troy Aikman said the emptiness of Rose Bowl Stadium was embarrassing and that the team played poorly despite the win.
Troy Aikman @TroyAikmanThis is an embarrassment but we couldn’t fill the Rose Bowl in 1988 when we were the #1 team in the country. Anyone else at UCLA think it’s time for an on-campus 30,000 seat stadium? Of course, if we can’t play better than we did today, it would be half-empty too. pic.twitter.com/jteVU8XV76
Thompson-Robinson completed 20 of 30 passes for 263 yards and three touchdown The team had four penalties and two turnovers.
The crowd and game-day atmosphere are diminished by the fact that Rose Bowl Stadium is an hour from UCLA. More fans might attend games if the school had a stadium on campus.
The Bruins haven't faced a ranked opponent yet and won't until Utah comes to town next month. Aikman said that UCLA wouldn't fill a stadium if it didn't play well.
