The world was very different a year ago. The talk of the country was a high school basketball team. It is a college team called Nebraska that is making questionable financial decisions off the field.

A year ago, college football fans couldn't get away from an ad. The goat is being chased by Nick Saban.

A year ago, Georgia was off to a great start with a perfect record, but there was one red flag that stood in the way of an even better team. The man was named Stetson Bennett IV.

A year later, what a difference it has made.

Bennett ended his day with a 48-7 victory over South Carolina. Bennett completed 16 of 23 passes for 284 yards and two touchdown and added another 36 yards on three rushes in the game.

Bennett did well on Saturday. According to the broadcast, he was sick and threw up on the sideline.

One of the best catches a tight end has ever made was made on the play before Bennett vomited.

Bennett was 6-of-10 for 159 yards and a touchdown after he vomited.

He is a legend.

Bennett kept the QB1 chair warm last year. He's throwing the ball for an average of 11 yards per throw.

In a game in which no Georgia player ran for more than 36 yards, Georgia easily defeated an SEC East foe. This team has looked great.

Georgia started against a ranked opponent. This time, instead of a narrow 10-3 win over a stagnant offense, the bulldogs dominated Oregon, 49-3.

It wasn't a test run for Bennett to be in charge of the offense, but rather the latest example that he's just built different.

Georgia defeated its first three opponents by scores of 106-23.

After winning a national title and getting a busload of draft picks, the Dawgs are off to a great start.

This is not the Georgia bulldogs of the future. This team might be even better than the one in 2021. The guy spent last season doing what no one thought possible, then won a championship and appeared on "Good Morning America."

Do you think this year will be this one? He could end up doing even more.

The Fun Belt rides again

Week 2 was drama-filled in the Sun Belt. The warm up was happening at Appalachian State.

One week after the Sun Belt pulled off three shocking upsets, the conference delivered another three games.

Old Dominion almost pulled off its second upset of the season against Virginia, scoring late to take a lead. A frenetic drive down the field put UVA in range for a chip shot field goal and a last-second win.

South Alabama was almost able to take down UCLA. The fake field goal from UCLA was a disaster. After the Bruins got the ball back, they drove 61 yards on 10 plays and scored a game-winning field goal.

The Sun Belt has four wins over Power 5 teams this season, but it has three losses on the final play.

App State delivered one for the ages, as Chase Brice's heave came up short of the end zone, and Christian Horn caught it, and sprinted into the end zone for a shocking touchdown.

A quick look back at the past three weeks for the West Virginia football team.

App State scored 40 points in the fourth quarter against North Carolina, but lost by two points.

The biggest win for the program since its famous victory over Michigan in 2007, App State upset sixth-ranked Texas A&M in the second week of the season.

On a day that College GameDay came to campus, there was a walk-off victory over Troy.

It doesn't matter that the mayor hasn't announced a "Purge" situation in which everything is legal for a day. The James Madison game is next week.

It's getting ugly at Auburn

Across the state of Alabama, auburn boosters sit in rooms filled with smoke and cackling like Bond villains.

There is a season on The Plains.

It must've been hard for the money men at auburn to see Nebraska make a coaching change and think, "Why not us?".

There was a lot of nervous anticipation as Penn State ran the ball to the tune of 245 yards and five touchdown in a 41-12 win, with the knowledge that they spent a lot of money on another failed coaching hire. The Boosters were more likely to reach for their money than the runner.

There was a moment of fear when Robby Ashford entered the game. Is it possible that Bryan Harsin has found a Savior? Order was restored and boosters breathed a sigh of relief after the auburn offense reverted back to its fundamental mediocrity.

After nearly nixing Harsin last winter, then forcing out the athletics director who hired him last month, the question was always about when a change was coming. Allowing a head coach to twist in the wind is what the tigers do best.

Harsin is going to twist. In its past eight games, auburn has scored less than 24 points in six of them The remaining schedule includes games against five ranked teams. Bowl eligibility is a low bar for a fan base that must compare itself to Alabama in order to get into a bowl game.

It is bad news for Harsin. It's not that bad. Everyone is happy about that $18 million buy out.

Sooners make a statement

There was a rapid change at Nebraska. The Huskers are no longer losing close games because of Scott Frost's departure.

Nebraska was defeated by Oklahoma 49-14.

The problems in Lincoln weren't solved by a coaching change. Saturday showed that Oklahoma's fortunes haven't changed with a new coach.

play

Gabriel ran for 61 yards to tie the game against Nebraska.

Oklahoma looked very much like the Sooners we've come to expect in its first game under Venables. Gabriel ran for and threw two touchdown passes. The defense did a good job. The game was out of hand after Nebraska scored on its first drive. The Oklahoma defense dominated the line of scrimmage, tormenting Thompson with four sacks.

It was a statement that Lincoln Riley's departure wouldn't stop the Sooners from being in the playoffs.

It was a great chance for the Huskers to interview Urban Meyer for the open head-coaching job. Nebraska has a lot of open space for a man to display his pictures.

Around the horn for the FCS

The games in Week 3 had their share of mismatches, but that didn't mean they weren't interesting.

The bad: Southern Illinois' defense forced four turnovers in their upset win over Northwestern. The best team in the state of Illinois is still not known.

The good: Virginia Tech defeated the Terriers 27-7 but that wasn't all good for them. The first points of the year were scored by Nathan Walker with 9:34 to go. That is progress.

Kent State earned its first win of the season. It's not clear what LIU has done with its money. The Sharks lost to Toledo, Miami, and West Virginia last year, as well as to a Florida International team in the first game of the 2020 season.

If you're keeping score at home, that's five games in the last 13 months that resulted in a combined score of 258-20. Long Island University is to college football teams as Long Island iced teas are to beverages, with a seemingly endless series of bad decisions.

The most college football thing to happen Saturday

There is a long and colorful history of mascot shaming among rivals in college football.

On Wednesday, Hudson -- the yellow lab puppy and Old Dominion's unofficial mascot -- announced via hisTwitter account that he had been denied field access for Saturday's road game.

Hudson wasn't allowed on the field because he wasn't a mascot and was a service dog. The bar for entry couldn't have been that high because Virginia's offense was allowed to play in the game.

The furor started on social media. Hudson is a puppy with rec and crocs. There is a puppy on the sideline for a football game. This is Showbiz 101.

When Virginia's own service dog, Champ, got involved, the problem was solved. Thomas Jefferson gave control of the university to a line of yellow labs after he died. It's history is crazy.

Hey @HudsonODU, I talked to my people and asked if we could have a play date Saturday. They said yes! And guess what? They said we could meet up on the field at the @UVAFootball-@ODUFootball game! You in?@servicedogsva | @MuttswaMission

There were still two questions after the drama was over.

Is the pups going to meet? Yes was the answer. Champ and Hudson were focused on the game even though it was a big one. Fraternizing with the enemy is not allowed.
