Delta will soon let you redeem miles for bag fees on many more flights

Do you want to check a bag on the plane? It will cost you $30. It will cost 3000 SkyMiles if you choose a new option.

The $30 fee for a checked bag is still a staple in the industry, but this month Delta will allow SkyMiles to be used to pay luggage fees.

The program was put on hold for a while after Delta first trialed this offering for flights departing from Columbus, Ohio. The trial is going to be expanded.

SkyMiles members with flights from most domestic airports can pay for their checked bags with miles instead of cash, according to the carrier's newly updated website.

Booking with up to nine passengers will soon include this option. Drake Castaneda said it will be available in the coming days and weeks for flights leaving most domestic airports.

Delta launched this alternative payment method for flights departing from seven airports, but the airline wouldn't specify which airports.

You're not alone if you don't see the option to pay with SkyMiles during check-in. Delta expects to communicate more information about this option early next month, but it will take some time for the technology to be deployed nationwide.

Due to the complex nature of bag operations at the JFK and Atlanta airports, they will be the last domestic airports to get this function.

SkyMiles can only be used to pay bag fees. Excess baggage fees are not allowed to be paid with miles.

The first bag will cost 3000 Skymiles. It's likely not worth it to redeem your miles at a lower valuation than the cash cost. It wasn't immediately clear how much a second bag would cost.

If you only have a few miles in your account, it's a good idea to redeem them for bags.

Premium-cabin customers who are entitled to complimentary checked bags will not be affected.

You can get the first checked bag free if you have a Delta co- branded credit card.

Delta has been the most aggressive about changing the rules between cash and miles. The airline now has the ability to purchase upgrade with miles.

You can use miles to purchase a bottle of Dom Perignon Champagne. The $195 bottle is one of the best deals out there.
