Ye announced over social media that he planned to open a chain of stores, starting in Atlanta and expanding across the U.S. and then the world, but not before he received the official terminated letter.

He said he would leave his partnership with Adidas when it expired in 2026. Companies stand in between me and the audience.

The president of Gap immediately sent an email to all of the company's employees saying it was a mutual decision.

How we work together to deliver the vision of bringing high-quality, trend-forward, utilitarian design to all people is not aligned. The email stated that the partnership was going to be wound down.

According to Ye, the Gap didn't meet the terms of its agreement to sell 40% of the clothing in brick-and-mortar stores and to open five stores by the end of July.

The important thing to know is that we have upheld our commitments.

He said that the teams have done so with integrity and determination. That shows how Gap perceived Ye in their relationship.

It looks like it's a "suits versus creatives" controversy. Ye appears to be cutting off his nose to spite his face because of the amount of money hanging in the balance.

Vision not money

The dollars and cents were being dealt in by Gap. It makes no sense for Gap to allow Ye to leave and go his own way.

Ye has what it takes to revive the brand and bring it back to relevancy. Ye has a vision, passion and energy, as well as an energetic customer following.

Ye requested a seat at the board of directors. The company said no.

Neil Saunders of GlobalRetail said that he could not do a worse job than the board had done. The decline of an American icon has been overseen by them.

The board is made up of too many beancounters and those people shouldn't be running it. People who understand brands are needed. People with vision are needed.

Gap’s troubles mount

The beancounters don't have as many beans to count.

Gap has been stagnant since 2005 when Old Navy overtook it in sales. Gap lost a lot of money after Old Navy took off.

Gap brought in less than half the revenue of Old Navy.

Old Navy's revenues fell from $4.7 billion to $3.9 billion in the first half of the year, a decline of 15% from a year ago. The gap is down by 10%.

Gap Inc. needs to find a new CEO after Sonia Syngal left. She held that post for a couple of years after leaving Old Navy.

Nancy Green left this past May and was replaced by Horacio Barbeito. Barbeito had been with Walmart for 26 years and had most recently been Walmart Canada's president and CEO.

Disruption needed

The email said that the brand would return to being bold, breakthrough and disruptive. That was what Ye and his brand had to offer.

The gap between the two parties is too large to be bridged. Gap should not have put him in a box when he made it clear that he wouldn't stay there.

This is not marketing by celebrities. This is not a group of people working together. He spoke to a group of Gap executives. We need to be the top energy brand in the mall. You have to give me the position to be Ye and do what I want, or I will have to do something else. This is bigger than us and we shouldn't argue amongst ourselves because a guy like me cares a lot about this brand.

It is hoped that Gap will make good on their promise soon. Ye is just the disruption that Gap requires.
