Walmart is offering consumers a more intimate online shopping experience through a virtual try on tool that allows users to see how clothes look on their own bodies
Walmart acquired a virtual fitting room startup in the middle of the 21st century. Walmart's "Choose My Model" technology allows customers to see how clothes fit on a body similar to theirs by choosing between 50 different models.
The next phase of "Be Your Own Model" will allow users to try on more than 270,000 items on their own bodies, but they will need to remove their underwear or tight-fitting clothing before the feature can work correctly.
Walmart's executive vice president of apparel and private brands said in a statement that customers can use their own photo to better visualize how clothing will look on them.
Users who are more modest have more options. In the Walmart app, users can decide if they want to see clothes on a model of their choice or if they want to be a model themselves.
Walmart's "Be Your Own Model" uses artificial intelligence and machine learning to mimic a more realistic fit than before.
Incandela said that Walmart was the first to offer a virtual try-on experience for apparel brands at scale.
Walmart is following in the footsteps of other retailers and offering virtual try-on services. In August, Amazon launched an augmented reality service that allows customers to try on shoes virtually, and other retailers like Macy's and Adidas have also previously worked with the company.
