Silva was born in Brooklyn and grew up in Harlem. Silva played the role of Mother in A Hatful of Rain on Broadway. He appeared in at least two movies from the 50s and 70s and played the character again in the 1957 film. The Manchurian Candidate, Johnny Cool, and Ghost Dog: Way of the Samurai are some of the films that have been credited to him.

When Silva and his family moved to Italy in 1965, a producer made him an offer that saw him as a hero instead of a villain. He starred in a number of Italian crime dramas during the 1960's and 70's. He made a name for himself in Italy, Spain, Germany, and France with The Hills Run Red.

Silva gave the voice for Bane in Batman: The Animated Series and the 1998 sequel series and the 1996 Superman cartoon. The character has a very strong Latin American accent in his debut episode. That accent is replaced in favor of a typical American accent.

The 2001 remake of the 1960 crime film Ocean's Eleven was the last role Silva would play.
