It was the 17th question of the news conference, about 7 minutes, 50 seconds in, after the Dallas Cowboys lost to the Buccaneers. A reporter asked McCarthy if he was on the hot seat before the season started. Have you felt the pressure after a performance like this? McCarthy is 0-1 as a football team. I have more work to do coming out of this game, but that is our business. It's free to play. Pick winners straight up or against the spread and you can win a lot of money. Each week will be a referendum on McCarthy's future. After a disappointing end to the season with a home playoff loss to the San Francisco 49ers, that was the biggest storyline heading into the season. Cincinnati is visiting AT&T on Sunday at 4 pm. McCarthy will look to avoid his first 0-2 start since he joined the Packers. He will have to do it without his starting quarterback who had thumb surgery. Jerry Jones said on The Fan in Dallas that the quarterback could come back within four weeks. It would take six to eight weeks to recover from the surgery. The McCarthy talk will only get louder if the Cowboys lose to Cincinnati. "If I didn't think he was the right person to lead this team to a Super Bowl, he wouldn't be here today," Jones said in July. McCarthy should be under scrutiny. He thought he was going to inherit an offensive line that included a Pro Bowler in Tyron Smith, a Pro Bowler in Zack Martin, and a Pro Bowler in La'el Collins. Under McCarthy, they never played a game together. McCarthy was getting a man who was in his prime. In the fifth game of the 2020 season, he broke his ankle. He missed one game last season due to a calf strain that affected him for most of the second half of the season. The thumb is broken. McCarthy has played 35 games in Dallas. If not more, he could be out for the next three games. McCarthy was asked if he felt like he had not caught a break. I've lost my starter before. It's sad. I know how much these guys put into this. It is part of the challenge. When you get to where you want to go, it's even sweeter. Gordon is on center stage.

While injuries can derail a season, McCarthy has noted on multiple occasions that his best moment was when the Packers needed 77 players to win the Superbowl. He noted that 10 rookies played a key role in the Packers Super Bowl victory.
The Cowboys have had a lot of offensive line combinations. The Cowboys have used 43 different five-man units since the beginning of 2020. The Philadelphia Eagles have the most with 61.
Also missing Sunday's game are safety Jayron Kearse, who has a left knee injury, and left guardConnor McGovern, who has an injured ankle. Tyron Smith, the Cowboys left tackle, was lost for the season with a torn hamstring in the last training camp practice.
He said it was the league. McCarthy told the guys in the room that they would play. Something is going to happen soon. You are going to be expected to play at a high level.
Jones needs to be taken into account when it comes to McCarthy.
Since 1989 he has only made one coaching change.
The Cowboys started the year with a 1-7 record and Jones replaced WadePhillips with a new coach. The last gamePhillips coached was a 45-7 debacle against McCarthy's Packers in which the effort of several players came into question.
At the time of his dismissal, he hadn't won a playoff game in over a year. There could be a parallel to 2010 if this season goes the same way. Tony Romo broke his collarbone in the sixth game of the season, ending his career.
The players don't really care about that history. Outside noise doesn't matter. Winning against Cincinnati is more important than anything else.
Martin said that they're under a microscope. Guys are aware of that. Part of the game. People deal with injuries. It's unfortunate that some guys haven't been out there to see it. It is up to the players to deal with injuries. We can do a better job when certain guys are out. The coaches are not the only ones who have something to do with it. The players have to pick up some slack.
