  • When Charles III came back as king, I was at Buckingham Palace.

  • Some people cried out "long live the king" when he arrived.

  • It was a sign of hope for the future of Charles' reign.

A crowd of thousands of spectators cheered as Charles III and Camilla arrived at Buckingham Palace.

Members of the public, people of all ages, gathered outside the palace gates holding out phones and cameras, desperately trying to get a glimpse of the new British monarch as he drove by. There was a time that the very idea of Charles becoming king was called into question

The question of whether the public would accept Charles as their king has been debated in the UK.

The New York Times reported that a poll of public opinion in the UK about whether Charles would make a good king plummeted after his divorce from Diana.

Even though Charles admitted to his indiscretions publicly and waited until 2005 to marry his mistress, the UK public never forgiven him.

In a 2016 Opinium Research poll about the Queen's successor, more than half of the 2,000 people said they would prefer William to become the king.

While Charles has experienced positive press since the 1990s, he was left on the back foot again when his relationship with Prince Harry broke down.

After Harry told Oprah Winfrey that Charles had stopped taking his calls, his popularity took a big hit.

There were thousands of people who came to lay flowers in honor of the Queen, and those who did so were the same people I saw cheer Charles and Camilla on as they arrived.

It wasn't just what I saw that proved that the tide is changing for Charles. After the death of the Queen, public opinion shifted on Charles, according to a new report. A majority of the people who responded to the poll said that Charles will do a good job as king.

Charles' reign is getting off to a better start than he anticipated. It is not known how far he is able to go in the eyes of the public.
