The New York Times said the retainer was "unusually high."
The retainer was paid through his political action committee.
Trump's legal team has been questioned by his advisers.
Donald Trump paid a large retainer for a well known lawyer after he was rejected by several other attorneys.
The New York Times reported on Friday that Kise agreed to defend Trump with an "unusually high" $3 million retainer.
The figure is significant because Trump is notorious for not paying bills.
The former president faced a similar problem in the past.
The quality of Trump's legal team has taken a turn for the worse as he faces legal peril. Outside of Kise, Trump's previous legal team includes "a Florida insurance lawyer who's never had a federal case, a past general counsel for a parking-garage company, and a former host from a propagandistic cable outlet."
CNN reported in August that Kise was confirmed to be a part of the legal team. Both the January 6th case and the classified documents case will be taken on by him.
According to Law and Crime, Kise was credited with helping DeSantis become governor after publicizing that Andrew Gillum bought tickets to see "Hamilton" from an undercover FBI agent.
Since the 2020 election and the January 6 insurrection, Trump's legal team has been in the spotlight.
Eric Herschmann, a former Trump attorney, questioned the competency of some lawyers on the team. According to The Times, law enforcement officials scrutinized two of Trump's lawyers after they claimed the former president did not have access to classified documents.
The FBI raided Trump's Mar-a-Lago home in August and found that he had over a hundred classified documents.
A person for Trump did not reply immediately.
