ThePhantom of the Opera is closing after 35 years on Broadway. The final performance will be in New York on February 18.
The show opened in New York in 1988 and has been running ever since. Until The Lion King came into town, it was the most profitable place to live.
According to the Broadway League, The Phantom of the Opera has earned over one billion dollars on Broadway and has played over thirteen thousand performances. It was created by three musical theater legends.
Fans and critics loved Phantom of the Opera as soon as it opened. Frank Rich is a theater critic.
"Only a terminal prig would allow the onslaught of pre- opening publicity to poison his enjoyment of this show, which usually wants nothing more than to shower the audience with fantasy and fun, and which often succeeds, at any price."
According to The New York Post, the show hasstruggled to recover since it reopened in October of 2021. A good show makes $3 million a week, but Phantom only made $800,000.
There was a lot of sadness and humor in the response.
Phantom closing is sad and scary bc a lot of people who work there have been there for decades and some since the beginning in 1988. God there really is no job security in this field huh. I know they told us repeatedly but damn. I'n devastated for them.
