Princess Cruises will give one of its oldest names to its first ship in the new Sphere class.
The Sun Princess will be named in honor of Princess' Love Boat. The third Princess ship to have that name, The Sun, is due out in early 2024 with plans for a sister ship to follow in 25 years.
John Padgett, president of Princess Cruises, said that the Sun Princess was designed to both embrace Princess heritage and be bold in the future.
The ship is being built in Italy. The line said the Sun will have brighter and lighter décor and finishes than its other ships. The ship will have more than one dining room.
The dome area of The Sun will include an indoor-outdoor pool and a water feature. The pool will be turned into an entertainment venue with lighting effects and the ability to host aerial performances.
The Piazza at the center of the ship will have a suspended space where guests can sit and watch the ocean. It can be moved to make room for live entertainment in the center of the piazza.
There will be 2,157 rooms on the ship. According to the line, the Sun will have more outdoor balcony space and balcony rooms will have an in-room sofa.
The Sun will be introducing a new class of accommodations called the Signature Collection. There is a private area of the Sanctuary where guests can stay in the accommodations.
The rest of the fleet will be renamed the reserve collection. The mini-suites on the Sun will have resort-style staterooms with a balcony and a large outdoor lounge area.
The Sun will be Princess' first dual- fuel powered ship. The ships will be powered by gas.
At the legacy of the line, the name of the ship waves. "The Love Boat" was filmed on the first Sun Princess. The second ship was named after it.
The Sun Princess is going to sail in the Mediterranean. In the fall of 2024, the ship will leave for Caribbean voyages. The first three voyages are on sale. The time is Eastern on Friday.
