Disgraced mega-producer and convicted rapist Harvey Weinstein's health has dwindled in recent years, at least according to himself and his lawyers, the former film executive, who now uses a wheelchair, is said to be losing his vision and has complained of a number of dental ailments as Weinstein is asking the court to let him go for emergency dental care as he waits for the court to hear his case.
Weinstein told the court that the situation was an emergency. The dentist will be paid for one trip and one trip only.
I am in pain all the time. He said that the prison gave him two options: have his teeth pulled and not replaced, or suffer from tooth pain and any side effects that come with it.
We will say that Weinstein is a monster first. That's right, objectively so. He was sentenced to 23 years for three sex crime convictions, and is currently in pre- trial for 11 more rape and assault accusations. If you wanted to make a list of people who deserved teeth more than others, we're pretty sure Weinstein wouldn't be on it.
This is not a question of whether certain people deserve teeth or not. Something that no one should be asking is that. Americans have a right to necessary medical, dental, and mental health services, but pulling someone's rotten teeth out and calling it a day sounds far from adequate healthcare. Weinstein's treatment calls into question the issue of prison healthcare.
Inmates are very high users of medical services, according to Nicholas Scharff, a corrections physician. They've had a lot of trauma. They have a lot of problems with the joints. There are a lot of psychological traumas. They have a lot of diseases that are related to the general population.
There is a point to be made. Over 40 percent of inmates suffer from chronic illness, and addiction is one of the reasons why people are in prison. The American inmate population is disproportionately black, brown, and poor, which are all factors that can affect health outcomes.
It is hard for people there to get the services they need. Studies show a deep distrust between prisoners and staff, while other investigations show a lack of care and proper allocation of resources.
Adnan Khan told the station that he would drink the water from the sink in his cell to nurse himself back to health. I knew that the help I needed wouldn't be enough.
This isn't a pity case for Harvey Weinstein. He's a terrible guy. His dental experience is an example of an issue much larger than him. Human Rights include access to medical and dental care. Asking who deserves teeth and who doesn't can lead us down a dangerous road.
Harvey Weinstein wants a judge to give him a private dentist appointment so he can look better before his trial.
