Do not ask Bill Gates about the state of the world if you see him. The man is really going through it. We understand it.
According to The New York Times, the UN made a list of 17 sustainable goals in 2015. There wasn't any small dice.
Gates and his ex- wife decided to focus on the goals of the foundation after the UN announcement. We're nowhere near where we need to be halfway through the finish line.
Gates told the NYT that we're in worse shape than he thought. There are huge setbacks on all these measures because of the effects of the war in Ukraine and the Pandemic. Even if we missed the goal, these measures are still important.
The billionaire philanthropist talked about a lot of important topics. He said his most striking comment. Gates is worried about the state of all of these hopeful benchmarks. The role that distraction plays in the failure to meet them has him angry.
It's not that we're behind, it's the scariest thing. It's up to us to accept that. Gates said that the war in Ukraine distracts from helping poor countries and making progress on climate adaptation. It's a huge thing, whether it's defense costs, electricity costs, refugee costs, or fertilizer costs.
"With interest rates going up, with high levels of debt everywhere, but including in Africa, it's going to be difficult to maintain the world's attention over the next five years," he said.
He has something to say. There is a lot of work to be done if we are to save the planet and each other. We can't lose focus if we're going to get any closer to progress, because those responsible for our doom will be the first to suffer.
Bill Gates said sorry the world isn't going so great.
