Two men in tuxedos engage in an intense conversion while a more casually dressed woman looks on.

A new cast is introduced into the show's existing time-travel set-up. The new series follows Dr. Ben Song as he jumps between decades, helping out people in need while his lab team tries to figure out how to get him home.

The show's executive producer Martin Gero spoke to io9 and other outlets about the show's return. He focused on how the original characters and fresh approach to the material will please both old-school fans and Quantum Leap newbies.

One of the original creators of the show was with us all the time. Gero said that they were so lucky to have her. According to her, the four tenets of Quantum Leap are hope, heart, humor, and history. He is an optimistic character. He has a big heart. He has a lot of that to give because the show is about empathizing. The humor is something we wanted to make a really entertaining and fun show of. The humor was a big part of the original quantum leap. The entire cast is trying to find a grounded way to bring hope, heart, and humor to these episodes.

The existence of Dr. Sam Beckett is acknowledged by the new quantum leap. While Gero wouldn't comment on whether the character might play a part in the new series eventually, he and his fellow creators knew from the beginning that they didn't want to do a straight remake. It was crazy to do a new version of the show with a new Sam and a new Al. Gero stated that it would set up to fail. It made sense for this to be a continuation of the story with a brand new set of characters, one that could honor the old show, but have a really low bar for entry for new viewers. That is the tightrope we are walking. We want all of the fans of Quantum Leap to see the show and enjoy it. This is a quantum leap. It is an evolution of the original show.

Jenn (Nanrisa Lee) and Magic (Ernie Hudson) track Ben’s whereabouts in time.

He kept going. There is an enormous amount of people that are vaguely familiar with the title and are just going to watch the show. We didn't want to weigh the show down with a lot of mythology immediately that would make it feel like I need to watch a lot of Quantum Leap before I start this. This can be the start of something new. There is a lot of mythology from the original show that we are excited to share with fans, but it is done in a way that it will feel different for old fans. It feels like we're still in the middle of the story and it's coming out organically.

One big difference that OG Quantum Leap fans will notice is that Ben's co-workers are in the time-travel lab. In the premiere episode, which io9 viewed prior to the press conference, the action is evenly divided between Ben's journey to the past and his actions on equipment that isn't ready to handle his actions.

The original quantum leap is an anthology series. There was a lot of character development, but not a lot of story arcs. Gero said that everyone felt that they needed some sort of serialized aspect. We can ask 'Why did Ben leave?' in the modern day. What's happening? He didn't tell anyone. You don't have to be a casual viewer to enjoy that mystery. It should be balanced. Every now and again, if there is a huge event that needs to be talked about in the present day, it gets closer to 40% of the episode. We are going to be focusing on the leaps in the show.
