The White House said Thursday that the president would meet with the player's wife on Friday to demonstrate his continued commitment to get her released.

Biden will meet with the athlete's wife, Cherelle, for the first time since she was arrested at the Moscow airport for possession of drugs.

He was sentenced to nine years in a Russian prison in August after pleading guilty to drug-smuggling charges. The legal experts told Insider that the guilty plea was a strategic move in order to speed up the process of her return.

She was classified as "wrongful" by the State Department in May.

The basketball player's wife, friends, and teammates have been calling on the White House to do more to get the basketball player's release.

In July, the administration said it made a proposal to swap two people, including a former Marine who has been wrongly imprisoned in Russia, for a Russian arms dealer.

A White House official said in August that Russia was trying to add another convict to the swap. Since July, the Biden administration has not provided any official updates.

The White House has followed up on the offer many times and will continue to do so, according to the press secretary.

The public perception of the situation doesn't look good for the US.

Experts told the outlet that Russia's control of relevant information allowed the country to take charge of the narrative.
