An expert on Russia told Insider that Putin underestimated the willingness of Western governments to get involved in the conflict between two Soviet neighbors.

That miscalculation was on full display earlier this month as Ukraine secured one of its biggest victories yet following the launch of two major offensives in the northeast and south in an effective effort to regain territory that sent Russian troops fleeing.

Simon Miles is an assistant professor at Duke University and a historian of the Soviet Union and US-Soviet relations.

The presence of Putin's adversaries in recent victories has left the Russian president angry.

The professor said that Putin was aware of the situation. It's frustrating and humiliating to him because I think he didn't believe it would happen.

The Western world's willingness to come to Ukraine's aid may have been blinded by Putin's vendetta against the country.

He underestimated the resilience of the west. He underestimated the willingness of western governments to take a hit to punish Russia.

In response to European sanctions on Russia, Russia shut down the Nord Stream 1 line and left the rest of Europe without natural gas. Europe's energy prospects are not good and Putin will try to push Europe to its limit as winter approaches. According to recent inventory data, the European Union is set to meet its winter natural gas storage goals two months early.

As a result of the war in Ukraine, the US has had to make sacrifice. Increased shipping prices have had an impact on the country as well as high gas prices, which remain high in many places.

The impact of Putin's war has been huge. Following Russia's incursion, the neutral countries of Sweden and Finland joined the military alliance.

It is a worst-case scenario for Putin that Russia's military losses coincide with the Western world's support for Ukraine.

This is making him crazy. I think he's miserable right now.

Russia's strategic defeat throughout the war has "dramatically" altered the perception of Russia's military strength and may ultimately put Putin's regime in jeopardy, according to experts.

It should be humiliation for Putin, as it should be. On the world stage, this is humiliation.
