The jersey that Michael Jordan wore in the 1998 NBA Finals when the Chicago Bulls defeated the Utah Jazz has sold for over $10 million.
In May, Diego Maradona's "Hand of God" jersey from the 1986 World Cup was paid $9.28 million, which was the most ever paid for a sports item.
Jordan won his sixth and final NBA championship and his record sixth NBA Finals Most Valuable Player award before he retired for the second time.
It is the second jersey from the NBA Finals to ever be auctioned. A 1997-98 Upper Deck Game Jersey patch card with an on-card autograph was the previous record for Jordan items.
The Babe Ruth jersey, worn circa 1918-1920, was the most expensive match/game-worn jersey ever paid for.
There have been a lot of sports items for sale. The most ever paid for a sports card and the first sports collectible to break the $10 million threshold were both achieved in August.
The last dance jersey is the only other eight-figure sports collectible. The price was predicted to be between $3 million and $5 million.
The season is his "magnum opus" as an athlete, and a testament to him as a champion and competitor, according to a statement. The 1998 finals jersey from Jordan is the most coveted of them all.
The previous record was paid for by Kobe Bryant in May 2021.
"In the weeks since we announced the auction, there's been a lot of excitement from both sports fans and history buffs who want to own a piece of history," Wachter said. The result solidified Michael Jordan as the undisputed GOAT, proving his name and incomparable legacy is just as relevant as it was 25 years ago.
