Following the breakthrough in negotiations on the national freight labor strike, Amtrak said in a statement that it will resume operation of its previously suspended rail service.
"Amtrak is working to quickly restore canceled trains and reaching out to impacted customers to accommodate on first available departures."
As of Friday, Amtrak plans to operate on a normal schedule nationwide, according to an email from the company's spokesman.
The White House said that a tentative agreement had been reached between rail companies and labor unions.
The president said that the tentative agreement was an important win for the economy and the American people. The hard work done to reach this tentative agreement means that the American people can breathe a sigh of relief.
Since Amtrak operates on railways owned by major freight rail lines, a freight rail strike would have had a negative effect on the company's ability to operate trains.
"Amtrak operates almost all of our 21,000 route miles outside the Northeast Corridor on track owned, maintained, and dispatched by freight railroads," Magliari said. If there had been a strike, the freight rail lines would not have been open.
All national service on long-distance lines was suspended on Wednesday to "ensure trains can reach their terminals before freight railroad service interruption if a resolution is not reached"
The freight rail workers will stay on the job until the final resolution is passed, which will allow Amtrak to resume service on the rail lines.
