Ben Foster decided to retire at the age of 39.
Foster made the announcement on his show.
He said that he was offered a deal by the club to join as cover for Karl Darlow, but it wasn't enough to leave his family in the area.
Foster was a free agent after four years atWatford.
"Deep down I didn't want to do it [turn down Newcastle]," Foster told his podcast, The Cycling GK.
It's hard to explain to people that you've just been offered a contract by the richest team in the world to go and be second-choice.
I didn't want to do it, I had a deep feeling that I would have to leave, that would kill me.
I don't think people can comprehend that I'm in an apartment in the city alone. It's difficult at the age I am and with everything else I have going on.
I know for a fact that if I'd gone there I'd have had an amazing time, the guys would have been brilliant and I'd have buzzed off the stadium, but the sinking feeling was 'I don't.'
Foster didn't play a first team game for the Potters.
He was spotted by Sir Alex Ferguson in the summer of 2005 when he was on a loan at the time.
He won the League Cup twice at United, but was mostly second choice.
Foster spent two years on loan at two different clubs before signing for West Brom in the summer of 2012 after two years at the Hawthorns.
He spent six seasons at The Hawthorns and played a total of 509 games in his career, the last being the final game of the season when they lost toLeicester City.
