Air Canada is moving in the right direction.
The airline said on Thursday that it has ordered 30 of the aircraft. Air Canada has an equity stake in the manufacturer.
In all electric mode, the plane will seat 30 passengers in a 2x1 configuration and fly up to 200 kilometers.
When the capacity is limited to 25 people, the range can be extended to 400 kilometers.
Michael Rousseau said in a press release that Air Canada has taken a leadership position in addressing climate change. Our goal of net zero emissions by 2050 will be a step forward with the introduction of the ES 30 electric regional aircraft.
Air Canada is working on decarbonization. The airline is working on sustainable aviation fuel and carbon capture to reduce its emissions.
The month of April. Air Canada operated four flights from San Francisco to its Canadian bases using an oil refiner's product.
Air Canada is the second carrier to confirm an order. The 19-seater version of the ES-19 was purchased by United Airlines and Mesa Airlines. In two years, the aircraft is expected to enter service.
New Zealand's Sounds Air said it would have at least three ES-19s by the end of the decade. AIN Online reported that seven airlines have signed letters of intent for the plane.
As the industry continues to move towards more eco-friendly operations, there is interest in electric planes. On September 8, United announced an order for 200 Embraer Eve electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft, while American Airlines placed an order for a similar aircraft.
Delta does not invest in electric aircraft.
