It's not possible to say goodbye anymore.
We aren't even a week away from the U.S. Open or Serena Williams' final match. It was the third round, and we don't know who Serena is. We'll circle back around to that point. She defeated the No. 2 player in the world in three sets and went out in three sets. Serena gave everything she had, but it wasn't enough, and that's a fine end for a legend. Sampras was in his 30s when he got the Sampras. The greatest champion doesn't have enough in the tank It was not a surprise that Serena has been injured.
There were tears and loud cheers. She went out on her shield instead of on the trainer's table. It might not be perfect, but it's more than acceptable.
Serena is saying that the night won't be it. There is a quote that makes one vomit.
“I mean, you never know,” Williams said when asked whether she could be persuaded to return to tennis. “I’ve just been saying that I think Tom Brady started a really cool trend.”
It is not possible to say yes. Tom Brady doesn't have a cool trend. Brady has been chasing the trends that have passed by his empty noodle in order to remain relevant to the advertisers. He isn't on the cutting edge of things. He is the bat signal for bad things. He is your father wearing a jacket. It has been played out if Tom Brady does it.
The desperation of an attention junkie is what makes it so. Brady didn't stop working. He didn't miss a thing. He was trying to get a move to Miami. It wasn't about giving up the game. It was a way for Brady to soak in the adulation, have thousands of articles written about what a legend he was, do all the appearances, and then come to realize that all those tributes would soon be gone. The man would be in the background. He didn't like that.
He is not the only one. He tried to straddle the fence as long as he could so Packers fans, the media, and the NFL world would want him to come back. The Packers came to the conclusion that having their dreams of another Super Bowl end on another season-killing INT from Favre had gotten old and they were going to pivot to the guy who was better anyways. After leading the Jets to nothing so he could play for the Vikings, he kneecapped them twice in the playoffs. Everything with Brady is the same.
It must be difficult to let go. Serena's sister is out there. Venus is a different person, and though an all-time great in her own right, she has always wanted to be there. That isn't Serena's. Serena wants to dominate. Now that has left. The game has moved on, despite the fact that the top of the tour always changes. We have been saying that for a long time. It will not be easy in her 40s.
Serena was the only one who felt like she didn't give a flying fuck what people thought. When every other player returns to their chair, they get some water. Is Serena going to walk to the other side of the court? The IDGAF move is the ultimate one. Is Serena interested in fashion or acting? She doesn't care what you think. Some of her antics were questioned by players. Don't get emotional. For a long time, the crowd against her? She will win anyways. Is it a good idea to skip out on Indian Wells for a decade because of the booing of her and her sister? The crowd was on her side until recently.
It would feel like Serena can't live without the adulation. She made it clear that she didn't need an adulation. Things are on her plate. She has a lot of things to do.
This isn't it. Don't followTom Brady.
Let's end with another woman kicking her sport's ass until it's purple, and that's Mallory Pugh. She is one of the best players in the NWSL but she is also a vital player on the USWNT. The Kansas City Current found out all too violently that there is no more terrifying player on the break than Pugh.
Without a K.C. player getting in the way of her, she tore through with a vengeance. She could be the best player for the USWNT in the World Cup.
She feels like Bruce Banner when she gets into the field.
