Walmart shoppers will be able to try on clothes in virtual reality using the retailer's app.
To create a realistic simulation of what an item of clothing would look like on a customer's own body, Be Your Own Model requires customers to take a full-body photo of themselves. The feature is able to recognize where the fabric should drape and where it should fall because of the acquisition of the virtual try-on platform.
There are seven different sizes of a single shirt. Walmart says in a press release that it captures all the variations and shows how they look on each person.
It works with over 270,000 items of clothing.
The scale of the tech's capabilities is something else. Walmart has over 270,000 items of apparel that can be tried on. Levi's, Champion, and Hanes are some of the brands that can be tried on.
Walmart used the virtual fitting room technology in March. Instead of dressing the customer, it allowed them to choose from one of 50 diverse female models with a variety of skin tones, heights, and sizes. Anyone not comfortable uploading their own photo will still be able to do so at Walmart.
In order to use the feature, users need to take a full body shot of themselves wearing shoes and tight-fitting shorts and top in a well-lit environment and then input their height. They can reuse the image as a model whenever they shop at Walmart through the app or desktop.
Walmart's announcement of the Be Your Own Model feature made no mention of how the world's largest retailer plans to safeguard the semi-nude images it's asking customers to upload. Should we hear back, we will update this story.
The Be Your Own Model experience is available through the Walmart app, and is currently being rolled out to iOS users first.
