The remains of people who were thought to be "vampires" have been found.

Archeologists and forensic experts told Insider what they saw in the pictures.

The idea that the dead were affecting the living was not crazy at the time.

The woman's body was buried in a mass grave at a time when the bubonic plague was killing a lot of people.

When grave diggers opened the grave to add more bodies, they may have found this person. It is possible that it was in an earlier state of decay. It could be that it was still pink. grave diggers thought the shroud had been chewed on when it started decomposing around the mouth.

The grave diggers might have put a brick in the body's mouth to make sure.

All of this can be explained by us. Changes can be explained as a decomposition stage. The people in the past did not have a relationship with the body like we do today. Borrini made a statement.

The child died at a time when there was a lot of Malaria.

Jordan Wilson is the lead bio archeologist for the via Romana Poggio Gramignano archeological project.

It is possible that the stone was used to keep the child's spirit from spreading the disease.

She said that it could have been done to keep the child safe from witches.

She said Romans believed witches had the power to raise the dead and use their souls.

The vampire has a long history of being linked to disease.

In the earliest folklore of the United States from the 1600s to the 1800s, there was an idea that if someone in a family died suddenly, then they would come back and torment the living.

The mythical creatures were blamed for all of the misery that could not be explained with the science of the time. If a disease like Tuberculosis were to spread through the village, it would be one example.

The 'vampire' begin to kill family members first, then the neighbors, and then all the other village. He said that this is the pattern of a disease that is spread.

Vampires were not thought to be as sexy as we think of them in the past.

The result of Victorian novels and more modern movies is a lot of stereotypical images of vampire's.

The vampire's sex appeal was less than before because it was a corpse that was not dead and could spread diseases.

Wilson said that the idea of the vampire from a rotting zombie to a sexy aristocrat was shaped by the poet LordByron.

They were used as a metaphor for sex in the books.

The idea that a person can become a vampire if they are lured and killed by a vampire is present in both early traditions and Victorian novels.

The depictions of the vampire would make us think that they would die.

People who buried the bodies were more interested in keeping them out of the grave.

The National History Museum head said in 2012 that the stake would have been hammered through the body to the bottom of the grave.

Borrini said that other ways to keep the body in the grave were to nail down the shroud that they were wrapped in, to weigh them down with stones, or to put rose thorns on their graves.

It used to be more likely that you would be suspected of being a revenant after death.

There are two types of people who are believed to be vampire.

Any death out of the ordinary could be referred to as a bad death.

Many people who die suddenly, like people who get struck by lightning, are given unusual burials.

Being the seventh child of a parent was a risk factor.

People who looked different from others were given unusual burials. Wilson doesn't think this means they were seen as vampire.

It's not uncommon to see people with less common features in burials, but that's not always done with disrespect. These people were thought to be very powerful sometimes. They deserve a kind of specialized mortuary treatment after death.

The experts are debating what makes a burial.

The first documented account of a vampire is from the 11th century. It's hard to know when and how the beliefs started spreading because they are few other contemporary documents. It was in the 17th century that scholars began to study and document these myths.

He said vampire burials may include beheading or burning of the bodies.

Wilson defines a "vampire" as a recipient of a deviant burial.

The person was buried in a way that was different from other burials at the time.

The vampire is a Western idea. She said that the idea of the dead that can either rise from the grave or the dead that can continue to plague the living beyond death is something that's been around for a very long time.

She said that "vampire" burials can be found all the way back to the Stone Age.

The fear of the undead goes on even after the myths have been around for a long time.

People who are concerned about being a vampire still call Borrini.

Over the years, I've gotten calls from people asking me if I studied the vampire. He said that he thought that his boyfriend was one of those people.

Wilson wants to learn more about the culture through these beliefs.

The people in the past are very similar to us. People's fears are still there. We talk about them and express them differently.

Our monsters are always around. She said that they just changed shape.
