After a brief pre-order period, Apple will begin shipping their new phones this week. The company's marquee products for the year have a lot of expectations on them. There have been a number of changes to the iPhone this year. There is a new display with a new interface paradigm and a new high-resolution camera. Is it worth it to shell out over $1,000 for a new phone? We will have to look at it for ourselves.

Here are some key insights from our colleagues on other tech sites as we await our review of the iPhone 14 and 14 Pro.

The new full-screen iPhones, the 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max, do not have a notch. TheDynamic Island is a cut-out on the top of the screen that turns into a play space for little bits of interaction with the app. The Face ID pop-up, music controls, live activities, and so on are included.

I need to spend more than a week with the iPhone 14 Pro to figure out how much of an impact it will have on my life, but for now, the biggest effect is aesthetic. Seeing the pill change into a square when I sign into an app or Apple Pay with Face ID is a nice touch.

A lot of what Dynamic Island has to offer is possibilities. You don't know how many apps will plug into the little live activitiesAPI and how it will be used. It won't be until the release ofiOS 16.1 that apps will be able to take advantage of it. We will be able to make a full assessment after a while.

The Dynamic Island is one of those things that needs a year of refining and developer attention before we know how important it is.

The always-on display is one of the highlights of the display. The display of the iPhone will now be active while not being used.

I fell in love with the idea of the AOD, as it is abbreviated, on the Moto X, the iPhone 14 Pro, and the Lock Screen, but I wish they were doing more with their versions.

Apple's always-on-display implementation leaves you with a fully visible lock screen, which is just dimmed down. Not everyone was in favor of this implementation. "As someone who doesn't use a personalized background, I don't think that's a big deal."

The camera isn’t much better though

The high-resolution camera parade that you will find on the very best Android phones has been joined by Apple. The company is moving to 48MP from 12MP. That is close to the range of phones that run from 50MP to as much as 200MIP. The jump in the quality of results has not been as impressive as it would appear.

The reality isn't the same. The photo details are sharper, with less image noise in almost all kinds of lighting, but they are very similar to photos taken with an Apple device. Is there any difference in image quality in this outdoors comparison? Writing for Input Mag, Ray Wongy said that unless you zoom in and do a side-by-side comparison, it's not really a good idea.

The 14 Pro and 13 Pro take the same pictures. The 14 Pro is a little cooler and captures a little more detail in dim lighting, but you really have to look for it.

The camera on the iPhone is pretty decent. As with Dynamic Island, third-party developers and talented photographers would have to pull out the true potential of the iPhone's camera in order to make it work.

The full-size crop is only able to zoom in on certain areas. You can see how close you can zoom in. The detail is important. It is very impressive for a camera on a mobile device. The photos from the phone mean a lot. Wong writes that Apple's work with the Photonic Engine is magic.

The reviewers thought it was a good outcome, but they were expecting better.

Save your money, buy an iPhone 13

We focused more on the Pro models if you were paying attention. There is a conclusion that is hard to escape when it comes to the iPhone 14. Bigger cameras, a slightly bigger battery, and a few other minor changes are what Apple has in mind for the next iteration of the phone. It is to the credit of the iPhone 13 that it is still competitive, and if you were to consider buying it over the 14 it would be worth the extra money.

There is an argument for the iPhone 14 if you are on an older version of the device and want a 6.1-inch screen.

Since you can get a lot of what the iPhone 14 offers with the iPhone 13, there isn't much reason to get an Apple product. The iPhone 14 Plus is a different beast on its own. It is not the best deal for the regular Apple device.

Guide to the eSIM

The batteries for the 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max all have good qualities. It was heartening to see that Apple met the standards they set for the phone. Some reviewers were mildly irritated by the switch to eSIM, but it's nothing that can't be fixed over the next couple of years.

Few reviewers were willing to try out the crash detection feature. Ditto for the support for satellites. Both are great and useful feature additions, but they are also niche in that you will rarely find a situation where the stars align for you to use the other.

Apple is going to redo the iPhone X. It is a new form factor for the phone. The Plus model is also available. The iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max are for people who want to see what the future holds. The iPhone 14 and 14 Plus are what Apple is selling, if you want to stay comfortable for a while.
