Jon Moxley is an All Elite Wrestling OG even though he has a unique path to fame. He wasn't at All In, the Youngbucks andCody Rhodes self-promoted show that started as an online bet and ended up selling more than 10,000 tickets on American soil. That show may have been the reason for AEW. Moxley didn't travel to Japan, Europe and all over America with the cast of Being The Elite, but he did appear for Ring of Honor, where many BTE storylines crossed over into the squared circle.
Moxley wasn't allowed to He was busy performing as Dean Ambrose and waiting for his chance to break out of the diminishing relevancy. With his intentions to leave McMahonland becoming public, the company decided to give countless sendoff matches, teaming him with fellow members of The Shield for a final time. It is the final time. One more chance to measure.
Moxley didn't attend the Jacksonville or Las Vegas press conferences to introduce the company's roster. He was the first outsider to join and threw Kenny Omega off the stage at the end of the show. Throughout the last three years, when the company has needed someone to step up to battle through adversity or be at the top of the card with limited options because of injury, Moxley has been used more times than not. He thrives in that role, giving indefatigable effort to a cause he didn't find, but one Moxley set the standards for.
His most meaningful contribution may be in the present. CM Punk was supposed to beat him for the AEW World Championship. Moxley's six-week vacation and time away from the company never happened after the brawl in the backstage area. He wasn't going to leave around. He did the mundane grunt work despite his status as a celebrity. He did it twice this summer. Moxley was named interim champion after Punk was hurt. He has been there to pick up the pieces from Punk's messes.
Moxley did not return to AEW until the last few months of 2021. That's a sign of strength. Mox needed help to not hurt other people. He looks great in the ring after his return. That pattern is a positive one for him. He had second hand exposure to COVID-19 during his first reign as AEW World Champ. He didn't get into AEW's bubble. He was able to get that information before the outbreak happened.
Moxley was the company's leader for most of the unvaccinated era. Two weeks before the world stopped, he defeated Chris Jericho. Most of his first title reign, no one was in the crowd outside of the AEW roster. The live art form of professional wrestling has an exchange between fans and wrestlers. It was extremely difficult to lead the company during that time. It's not Moxley.
Take a look at what Moxley was up to before he joined the company. He wasn't just an athlete, a model or a weightlifter He cut his teeth in combat zone wrestling Moxley was able to get through tough work because he didn't have a lot of attention on him. Moxley needs flowers for a lot of things. He needs to be seen as one of the top professional wrestlers in the world. He won't claim his status because he's focused on lacing up his boots and kicking ass That is why he deserved it.
Moxley was slighted by the PWI 500 on Wednesday, a ranking of the best wrestlers in the world, maybe because of his time away from World Wrestling Entertainment. The list is low hanging fruit. He was left out of the top 10. Most wrestlers have a full year, but his nine months are better. Moxley isn't disrespected and I'm pretty sure he doesn't care. Mox is the better leader for AEW. He is going to get that vacation soon.
