Serena fights back tears in emotional postmatch interview (3:10)

Serena Williams thanked her family and fans in an emotional farewell interview. 3 minutes ago

Serena Williams could be following in the footsteps of Tom Brady.

Williams, who said last month that she was "evolving" away from competitive tennis after this year's US Open, once again mentioned a possible return during an interview with "Good Morning America."

This time he referred to another legend.

Williams was asked if she could return to tennis. I think Tom Brady started the trend.

After retiring from football in February, Brady announced six weeks later that he would return for a 23rd season in the league.

Williams, who turns 41 later this month, lost in the third round at the US Open in what was thought to be her last tennis match.

Williams didn't use the word "retirement" but was vague about whether her appearance at the US Open would be her final one. She replied "you never know" when asked if she would walk away.

Venus Williams is one of the people nudging her to stay active.

Serena Williams said that her sister wasn't done yet. It's just me." I'm not going to let her get me.

Regardless of her playing career ending, Williams wanted to stay involved in the sport.

She said that she wants to be involved in tennis in the future. I don't know what that involvement is yet, but I love the sport, I love the game, and I love everything about it. It's just been a light in my life, and I want to keep it that way.
