As of Thursday, all long-distance train service in the US will be suspended due to a potential freight rail labor strike.

The California Zephyr, Empire Builder, Southwest Chief, and parts of the Texas Eagle train routes were canceled Tuesday.

The City of New Orleans, Coast, Crescent, Lake Shore LIMITED, Silver Star, Sunset LIMITED and the full Texas Eagle route are some of the routes that will no longer be serviced by Amtrak.

Most short- to medium-distance rail travel along the Northeast Corridor will not be affected by the service cuts. Long-distance service on the East Coast will be affected by the cancellation.

"Amtrak will only operate trains this week that we can ensure will have enough time to reach their final destinations by midnight on Friday, September 16th."

The potential for a freight rail strike has led to the cancellation of all long-distance rail services. There is a Friday deadline for labor negotiations to be resolved.

If there is a freight rail strike, the ability of Amtrak to operate trains along those lines will be affected.

"Amtrak operates almost all of our 21,000 route miles outside the Northeast Corridor on track owned, maintained, and dispatched by freight railroads," Magliari said. If a resolution in negotiations is not reached, the cancellation of Amtrak trains are necessary to ensure trains can reach their terminals before freight railroad service is interrupted.

Short-to-medium-distance train service along the Northeast Corridor and related branch lines will continue to be provided by Amtrak. This is possible because of the rail network owned by Amtrak. The Northeast Corridor system is operated by employees of the railroad. There should be no impact on operations within the wholly owned Amtrak system.

Train travel between Boston, New York and Washington, as well as connecting lines to Albany, New York, and Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, should not be affected by the storm.

Passengers in the Northeast Corridor should be aware of the possibility of schedule changes and cancellation on those routes. It's important to confirm the timing of your train trips there.

Amtrak refunding tickets, waiving fees

The railroad will notify riders who may be affected.

Customers will be able to rebook without change fees or have to pay a fare difference if they do so through October 31. The railroad is giving refunds without cancellation fees.

Bottom line

The threat of a freight rail strike will cause the suspension of long-distance rail service.

Short- to medium-distance train routes along the Northeast Corridor will continue to be operated by Amtrak.

Passengers should be aware of potential delays or changes in this area.

The situation of the freight rail negotiations is not known when the service will resume. Stay up to date with the situation by following the situation on the internet.
