United Airlines and Emirates will sell seats on each other's planes, marking a change in the business model of the one-time foes.

As part of the deal, United said it will begin flights to the Middle East.

Passengers will be able to burn frequent flyer miles on their carriers.

In the past, United and other major U.S. carriers have fought against the expansion of Persian Gulf airlines in the United States, arguing that they were competing unfairly with government subsidies.

The airline said it is ending its codeshare partnership with the airline on October 30. The Abu Dhabi-based airline said it will expand its partnership with the airline.

In June, the airlines said they would increase their codeshare partnership.
