According to a report, the Dallas Cowboys aren't expected to make a big move at quarterback in the wake of the injury to starter Dak Prescott.

The Cowboys are unlikely to trade for a quarterback like Jimmy Garoppolo of the San Francisco 49ers or Mason Rudolph of the PittsburghSteelers, and they aren't expected to sign a big-name quarterback like CamNewton either.

The most likely course of action for the Cowboys is for Cooper Rush to be the starter, Will Grier to be the backup and sign a third quarterback to the practice squad.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said Tuesday that he was optimistic that Dak would only miss four games due to his thumb injury.

It's a huge loss for the Cowboys since they don't have a good contingency plan.

Even though the Cowboys were able to use an established veteran in Andy Dalton as their replacement, they still missed the playoffs.

The team went 11-5 and won the NFC East last year. The Cowboys had a single-season record with 37 touchdown passes.

The Cowboys are going with a journeyman who has only one career start to his name.

Rush led the Cowboys to a 20-16 win over the Vikings last season and threw for 325 yards and two scores.

It's possible that the performance proves to head coach Mike McCarthy and the front office that the Central Michigan product is capable of stepping in when called upon, but it's not easy.

The Dallas Cowboys have a tough schedule with games against the New York Giants and Washington Commanders sandwiched in between games against Cincinnati and the Los Angeles Rams.

Rush will have to face the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 6 if there is a longer than four game absence for the quarterback.

Garoppolo, Rudolph andNewton would give the Cowboys more starting experience than Rush, but it's not certain that they would provide better quarterback play.

Garoppolo was replaced by Lance in San Francisco, Rudolph is the third quarterback in Pittsburgh behind Mitchell Trubisky and Kenny Pickett, andNewton hasn't been an effective quarterback in the last year.

Rush is something of an unknown, but he has been with the team since the beginning of the year and knows the offense well, so he may be better suited than anyone to step in for the time being.
