Dr. Rochelle Walensky, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said that the pace of new cases has slowed over the last few weeks.
She testified before the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions on Wednesday that the growth of new monkeypox cases in the US and around the world has slowed recently.
She said at the hearing that they approach the news cautiously.
More than 22,500 cases of monkeypox have been reported in the U.S. and Washington D.C., making it the largest outbreak in the world.
The disease is not fatal but can cause blisters. One death has been confirmed as a result of the disease in the U.S.
The only approved monkeypox vaccine in the U.S. is the Jynneos vaccine, and it is important for people at risk to get the second shot. After the second dose of the immune system, it takes two weeks for it to peak.
According to CDC guidance, people who have monkeypox should stay at home until the rash has healed and a new layer of skin has formed, and do not share any objects or materials with other people.
