It is a good phone. You shouldn't buy an Apple product.

Let's explain if those two phrases are not compatible. The Apple device is capable. Everything from day-to-day tasks to graphics- intensive gaming can be handled by its Chipset. The best video clips from any phone in its class can be seen from its cameras. It is all true of the 14 and the 13 as well.

There are a number of useful upgrades over the 13 in the iPhone 14. The 14 are in a tight spot. One year after the release of the iPhone 13, Apple is still selling it and it's almost the same price as the 14 and $100 cheaper. The 14 has the same hardware as the 14 but a larger screen. The Great iPhone Mini Experiment taught us that people like large screens.

  • Better selfie camera
  • Good battery life
  • Crash detection and satellite SOS are neat
  • It’s more like an iPhone 13S
  • Display is still 60Hz
  • eSIM transition will be easy for most but painful for some

There are some genuinely cool new features in the iPhone 14, such as an upgraded sensor on the main camera, but it's almost exactly the same as the iPhone 13. It is the same with the same rails and dimensions. There are just two rear cameras, a standard wide and ultrawide, but the camera bump is a bit larger to accommodate the bigger main sensor, so that an Apple case won't fit.

A slightly larger camera bump means an iPhone 13 case doesn’t quite fit the 14.

The similarities between the two phones go deeper than you might think. The 14 Pro and Pro Max use the same A15 Bionic as the 13 series, but with one moreGPU core. It is unusual for Apple to put its newest chip in all of its phones.

The A15 is still able to do things. Having the latest processor isn't just about getting the best performance now, it also has some relationship to how many OS updates a phone gets and whether it will support certain new features. If nothing else, you would probably get OS upgrades a little longer if you bought the latest model. It feels less certain with the new phone.

The 14 has the same features as the 13 such as MagSafe, water resistance, and between 128 and 512 gigabytes of storage. The US version of the 14 supports both sub 6 GHz and millimeter wave 5G, which is fine since the US is the only country that cares about millimeter wave. One thing you won't see on the US version of the phone is a physical sim tray. Later, more on that. In the 13 there was support for wi-fi 6 and now there is support for wi-fi 5.1.

The 6.1-inch display is still just 60Hz.
The 6.1-inch display is still just 60Hz.

For all intents and purposes, the 13's screen is the same as the 14's screen. It has a 6.1-inch display with a standard 60Hz refresh rate, which is a little better than the Super Retina XDR. The screen is good, but the competitors are running circles around Apple. The flagship class of phones all come with screens with 120Hz refresh rates. It isn't a deal-breaker, but it feels like the standard iPhone needs an update You need to pay for the Pro model for the display to be super smooth.

I would expect to see a year-over-year improvement in the battery life of a new flagship model from Apple. According to the official specifications, the 14 will have up to 20 hours of video playing time. I charged between 40 and 50 percent at the end of the day in the real world. It is not clear if that is better than the already excellent iPhone 13, but it is good enough to get most people through a full day.

I mostly talk about what hasn't changed, so here's what new.

With a couple of new features, Apple says the iPhone 14 is a real lifesaver. The first is Crash Detection and it looks very similar to the one on the internet. A gyroscopic sensor and a high-g accelerometer are included in the 14. If data collected by the phone's sensors show that you've been in a crash, it will ask you if you're okay, and if you don't respond in a certain amount of time. It is unlikely that older phones would be able to support Crash Detection, even if Apple was willing to give it to older phones.

I haven't been in a car crash in the week I've been testing the phone, so I don't know if it works. In any case, it is something that happens on the phone and doesn't require anything of the user to enable. A nice-to-have feature is defined by this.

Apple is touting the iPhone 14 as a literal lifesaver.

Emergency SOS is coming to the 14 in November. The phone can communicate with emergency responders via satellite in areas without cell coverage. This is thanks to some custom components and software unique to the iPhone 14 series so don't expect to see it on older models either. When you answer a few questions, the emergency services will better understand your situation, and you will be directed to the nearest satellite.

Satellite SOS can give you some peace of mind if you spend a lot of time outside.

I got a demo of the feature in a field on the Apple campus, but it looked fairly easy to use. As the satellite crosses the sky, it can be seen on your phone screen. Sending a message can take up to 15 seconds depending on the view of the satellite. Messages in my demo went through in less than 30 seconds.

Satellite SOS can give you some peace of mind if you spend a lot of time outside. You don't have to go far out of the city to find yourself in a wireless dead zone. If you get turned around or twisted on a less busy trail, you can end up in real trouble. Something like this built into my phone is very appealing, even though I am not a serious hiker. It will come with two years of free service on the iPhone 14, but you will need to pay up, and Apple isn't saying how much it will cost.

Maybe it is a Photonic Engine.

Crash Detection and satellite SOS conjure up some pretty grim scenarios, so let's look at the light side. There is an improvement from the 13 to the 14. There are upgraded hardware for a number of reasons. The main camera of the 13 Pro and Pro Max is the same as the 14. There is no change to the ultra wide hardware of the selfies camera.

Apple has made some changes to how it processes images with a technology it calls a photonic engine Apple claims that it improves low-light performance compared to the Photonic-Engine-less iPhone 13 if it is applied earlier in the image processing pipeline. After shooting side-by-side samples in various conditions, I can say that the low-light images of the iPhone 14 are a little more detailed than the 13's, but I'm not sure that Photonic Engine has a lot to do with it. Thanks to the larger sensor, the 14 is able to use a lower ISO than the 13 There is more detail in low-light photos than there is in high-light photos. It could be Photonic Engine, or it could be good old fashioned physics.

The ultrawide of the iPhone 13 and the ultrawide of theiPhone 14 are different.

I can see the difference when I look at the 13 and 14 selfies. The 14's ultrawide shots look less watercolor-y, and selfies have more detail and better skin tone rendering. While standing at the front of a ferry boat, I used the front-facing cameras on both the iPhone 14 and the iPhone 13 to take a shot.

The main camera has a better portrait mode. The way the 14 handles cat fur looks a bit more refined than the way it handles my child's hair. The current portrait mode champ is the SAMSUNG GALAXY S22 Right now, its ability to identify a subject to the best of its abilities is unparalleled.

Action mode is a new stabilization mode that is designed to correct for more extreme movement. It is designed to be used in bright outdoor light. The camera is complaining and the footage looks bad. It isn't the best option when you're chasing your child.

It does produce very smooth footage outdoors. For most use cases, the standard stabilization system was already good enough for action mode, even if it was a little better.

The video on the phone is still good.

Previously, Cinematic mode was limited to HD resolution, but now it can be used up to 4K resolution. The 24p frame rate helps it pass as film-like footage a little better. Slow motion, timelapse, and all the usual video recording options are still available. Apple can afford to stand still because the video is still on top of the screen.

Agree to Continue: Apple iPhone 14 and 14 Pro

Every smart device has a set of terms and conditions that you have to agree to before you can use it. It is not possible for us to read and analyze all of them. Since these are agreements most people don't read and can't negotiate, we're going to start counting how many times you have to agree to use the device.

You have to agree to using any of the models.

You can send theiOS terms and conditions by email.

You can't use the phone if you don't agree to the agreements.

You have to agree to set up Apple Cash and Apple Pay when you set up the phone.

The Apple Cash agreement states that services are provided by Apple Payments, Inc.

You have to agree to it if you add a credit card.

You can't email the terms from your credit card company.

There are two mandatory agreements and six optional agreements for Apple Cash.

The physical sim tray is not included in the iPhone 14. eSIM is a digital version of the tiny sim card that identifies you to your carrier's wireless network. It is possible to have two eSIMs at the same time with the iPhone 14. Only one physical and one eSIM could be used for dual-sim. Outside the US, where eSIM adoption isn't as far along, the iPhone 14 will still have a physical sim tray.

No SIM tray to see here.

Half of my followers think dropping the physical sim card is a good thing, and the other half don't like it. You don't need to go to a store or wait for a physical sim to arrive in the mail if you use eSIMs. It's easier to swap phone lines because the iPhone can hold multiple eSIMs.

If you buy an Apple phone through a carrier, it will come with your number. You should be able to transfer your number from an old iPhone to an unlocked version. You can transfer your phone number from a phone with a physical sim to an eSIM on major US carriers. Depending on your carrier, you may be able to convert your physicalSIM to an eSIM. When you switch to eSIM, your physical sim card is no longer needed. It was a little nerve-racking to commit to changing my phone number from a physical one to an e one in the middle of a busy travel day, but it worked.

There are a lot of signs pointing to a future without physical devices.

If your carrier doesn't have Quick Transfer or carrier activation, you may not be able to get your number onto the phone. You may be able to do it on the website or through an app, but you will have to get an eSIM from your carrier.

Depending on your current phone and carrier, it can be difficult to switch to eSIM, or it can be done in the back of a moving car. All signs point to a future without physical sim cards as other phone makers get on board. Sometime in the future, you will have to switch to eSIM. There is something to be said for giving the carriers more time to iron out the issues with the new phone.

There’s an argument in favor of the iPhone 14 for a very narrow group of people.
There’s an argument in favor of the iPhone 14 for a very narrow group of people.

Apple is currently selling the iPhone 13 for $699. The cameras are still highly capable even though they aren't as good as the 14's. The video image quality of any phone released this year is better than that of last year's iPhones. We haven't been able to test the 14 Plus yet, but it has a bigger screen and better battery life, two things that a lot of people want out of a new phone.

One product will be The New Thing and the other will be old.

Don't forget about the GALAXY S22 For the same price as the 14, it includes a 3x telephoto camera, a display with a fast 120Hz refresh rate, and an always-on display, as well as three more years of OS upgrades beyond the upcoming Android 13 update. The upgrade is close to the four or five that the iPhone 14 will likely get.

The 14 Pro and Pro Max represent the start of some new ideas from Apple, including an always-on display, a shape-shifted screen, and a high-resolution main camera. As third-party app makers adopt them, they will get a little more useful, even though Apple hasn't nailed them on the first try. The 14 Pro feels like the first iteration of a new phone, while the 14 feels like the last one.

It’s notch dead yet.

There is an argument for the iPhone 14 if you are on an older version of the device and want a 6.1-inch screen. The iPhone 14 will fit you just fine. It is worth looking at your other options.

One product will be The New Thing and another will be old when you shift to new technologies in a product line. The dividing line has the 14 on it. The old and the new were both excellent. It's hard to see an argument for the 14 in the larger landscape of good phones.
