A photo of the iPhone 14 Pro Max

This is the first time I've reviewed an Apple product. I have established myself as the "Android girl" because I began my journey with that mobile platform and eventually grew to prefer it over my initial experience with the iPhone. I haven't used an Apple phone as my daily driver in a long time. It's been a long time.

I am enjoying my experience with the new Apple phone. It is easy to go back and forth between the two phones without missing a beat. There are some differences in usage between the two operating systems, but feature parity is almost one-to-one now.

Apple keeps it simple by sticking to its tried-and-true formula and improving upon it with every iteration, even though it has all the rights to brag about. Those with last year's iPhones 13 and 14 won't be getting an upgrade immediately. One of the features that makes the Pixel the most compelling is its nighttime photo shooting capabilities.

The review doesn't cover the concurrently released iPhone 14, which starts at $799 for the 6.1-inch phone and $899 for the larger device. The A15 chip from last year is slightly changed in that model. Better battery life is promised by Apple on its less expensive model. Soon, we will have a full assessment of that lineup.

Apple's flagship phone has an always-on display, long battery life, and nighttime photography capabilities that are better than those of thePixel 6.

Deep into the new purple

The Pro and Pro Max versions of the iPhone 14 Pro are available. The Pro version has a larger screen than the Pro Max, which has a smaller one. Both Pro models have the Dynamic Island in place of a lifeless notch, and both feature Apple's ProMotion technology, which allows the adaptive refresh rate to skate between 1 and 120 Hz. How that works in the next section will be explained by me. I wrote this review because of my experience with the phone.

A maximum brightness of 2000 nits is advertised by Apple. If you turn on adaptive brightness mode, it will only go that high if you are outside. If you manually increase the brightness, the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max will top out at over 500 nits.

Should you choose between the Pro and Pro Max, you should consider your lifestyle. The Pro Max is better for reading than one-handed for people with small fingers. I couldn't reach the back button on some apps because my right hand couldn't hold both sides of the device.

I am in love with the Pro Max I received from Apple. This is the color of the phone for goth girls around the world. It isn't as purple as the photos show. It is more subdued violet than the lavender- purple case on the flip 4. The other colors are gold, silver, and space black. Even the aluminum edges of the smaller iPhone 14 Pro are black, which makes it look very noir in person. I think you can achieve a cooler effect with something see-through if you bundle in a MagSafe Leather Case.

When it comes to design, the iPhone 14 Pro isn't much of an update compared to the previous iteration, the iPhone 13 Pro. The back shows a triple-camera array, with the flash right above the third camera lens on the right, plus all the necessary side buttons. The only difference is that Apple has decided to use the new eSIM standard instead of a physical sim card, which will be more secure than a physical card. I didn't have the chance to port over a number and try the process, but Apple gave me network access so I could start. Please let me know if you have the same experience.

A different kind of always-on display

A photo of the iPhone 13 Pro Max with the always-on display

I didn't like the idea of an always-on display on the phone. I said yes. That's something that's been happening for a long time. I fell in love with the idea of the AOD, as it is abbreviated, on the Moto X, the iPhone 14 Pro and its Lock Screen, but I wish they were doing more with their versions.

I will show you an example of how subtle Apple's always-on display is compared to what you'd get with the Z Fold 4. Apple dims the Lock screen wallpaper you have in effect when you choose between clock faces and graphics. It's easier to personalize than it is to choose something specific to display. There were instances where I didn't know that the always-on display was on when I looked at the Lock Screen.

To get access to that Lock Screen coolness, you'll need the latest version of Apple's mobile operating system. The Lock Screen haswidgets that will come through in the AOD. If you have an active app in the background, like a timer, you can see it on the Lock Screen when the phone is in display mode.

Take a vacation to a Dynamic Island

A photo of the Dynamic Island in use on the iPhone 13 Pro Max

It's up to Apple to figure out how to make the notch useful. There were a few laughs when the Dynamic Island was announced. If the notch takes up space from the screen, I would rather have it do something.

Dynamic Island is a software solution that can be used to remove the front-facing camera and Face ID sensor from the phone. To minimize certain apps to that part of the screen, it uses the Now Playing and CallKitAPI. Developers aren't immediately scrambling to make their apps work with the only version of the device available. The Dynamic Island can be used by apps like Apple Music, Pocket Casts, and others. You will be able to use ride-sharing apps in the Dynamic Island later this year.

Two apps can be accessed at the same time from the Dynamic Island. You can expand it by tapping. The process is quite fluid, and it's nice not to worry about being swiped down when trying to access something. It can be used to find out if something is playing in the background or through your headphones.

Is it possible for Apple to shrink that part of the screen so there isn't anything there? It's absolutely true. I am used to seeing most of the screen when I scroll vertically, because I am from the land of hole-punch cameras. In landscape mode, videos will be letterboxed so that the Dynamic Island doesn't block out the view. The pill-shaped island is clearly visible in portrait mode. If this is something that irritates you, remember that what you get in exchange is FaceID, which works well compared to my experiences with competing devices.

Nighttime photos have improved

A photo of the iPhone 13 Pro Max

The primary camera capabilities of the Pro-level flagship device have been improved. The quad-pixel sensor in this year's iPhone 13 Pro expands on last year's triple camera system. This works in the same way as the nona- and tetra-binning technology in the devices of the two companies. In Apple's case, the technology tries to get more light and detail by grouping four pixels into a quad-pixel sensor. Most flagship and pro-level devices use this type of technology, and it has become the status quo for smartphone cameras.

An image showing three test images from the iPhone 13 Pro Max

The primary camera on the phone is 48MP It shoots at 12MP with quad-pixel technology enabled. You can switch to Apple's ProRAW mode from the settings panel if you want to take all the photos you want. Apple says the camera sensor on the iPhone 14 Pro is larger and uses a second- generation sensor-shift OIS to aid in clearer shots when your subject is in motion. The larger sensor brings in more light as well.

The second camera on the iPhone 14 Pro is a 12-MP Ultra Wide sensor that can be aggressive with some of your photo subjects if you don't properly frame the shot. An example of it can be seen in the samples.

The primary camera has a 12-MP Tele photo lens. The telephoto can zoom in up to 15 times. I did not get a chance to compare the zoom capabilities of the two phones. I was impressed by the 14 Pro Max's ability to sharpen subjects from far away, even though it had a built-in 20x digital zoom. I used the 14 Pro Max and the Pixel 6 Pro to take pictures of the windmills. I was able to see what the structures were in the distance from the two photos. There was only one glaring difference between the two pictures. It is fascinating to see how Apple tones its photos.

The daytime photography on the iPhone 14 Pro is similar to the daytime photography on the iPhone 13 Pro. Portrait mode continues to impress despite the clear images. When taking photos of my child on a swing set, the iPhone 14 Pro's ability to capture still images from a moving subject was especially helpful. Even in landscape images, there was balanced detail and sharpness in the 14 Pro's photos.

It's nice to see Apple's top-tier iPhone line up to par with thePixel's Night Sight capabilities I preferred the result of the iPhone 14 Pro Max over the one of the Pixel 6 Pro because it was less intense. Apple's camera algorithm is more aggressive than that of the internet giant. It would light up parts I didn't want in the picture. In the initial night shot below, thePixel 6 Pro lit up the roof's awning on the right side of the photo, bringing up the detail in other parts where light is present. The moonlit sky is more important than everything else in the scene because the result is more focused on sharpening.

I preferred the result of the search engine. I wanted to highlight the trees and shrubbery in the foreground of the picture. The area around the moon is more detailed in thePixel 6 Pro than in the iPhone 14 Pro Max. The focus point was hidden in the clouds.

It would be nice to see the new phones on the same wavelength when it comes to nighttime photography. The 14 Pro has the ability to take indoor night shots. The images are a tad brighter and less yellow-tinged.

The video recording capabilities of the Apple device have improved. The phone can record video at up to 60 frames per second and up to 30 frames per second. I liked how easy it was to switch between zooms on the phone, like the one I reviewed. The Pro has a new action mode that acts like a gimble when you film and things are bumpy. There wasn't any action from me because I'm still dealing with some symptoms. As you turn with the camera, it makes leveling the scene much easier.

I didn't have enough time to test the TrueDepth camera on the phone. It has a 12-MP sensor with an f/ 1.9 lens. Portrait shots can be taken with different lighting effects. Night mode is built in. The self-love photoshoots have been difficult because I haven't been feeling well. I recorded a few TikTok confessions with the front-facing camera. The person on the other line said the video looked clear.

Performance has also improved, somewhat

A photo of the iPhone 14 Pro Max

The A16 chip is found in the new Pro and Pro Max phones. This processor is built on Apple's first 4nanometer process and has a 6-coreCPU and 5-coreGPU. It's very smol. Dynamic Island, high brightness, and the always-on display are all possible thanks to the A16 chip. The brains behind the camera are also behind it.

The A15 chip in the regular iPhone 14 is the same chip that was used in the iPhone 13 Pro. When I get to the review, I will discuss the experience with that one.

Apple dominates our internal benchmark charts. The A16 Bionic tested 36% higher than the Z Fold 4's chip on Geekbench 5. It is 12% higher than last year's iPhone 13 Pro, which is 10% faster than its predecessor. Next month, I will be able to revisit these numbers when the new phones are released. If you want to participate in things like mobile gaming and live streaming from your phone, choose the Pro model instead of the regular model.

You should know that the second generation of the Kishi is compatible with both the Pro and Pro Max. It was not possible for me to play Elder Scrolls Online with the new phones because it was only available through Stadia.

The battery life has improved with the new phones. The size of Apple's batteries isn't usually made public. Up to 20 hours of streamed video can be seen on the 14 Pro and 25 hours on the 14 Pro Max, according to the documentation.

The battery rundown test is the last thing I test for each review, so I will have to follow up with the final numbers of the two new phones. The iPhone 14 Pro Max has been streaming a video for over 16 hours. It is at 29%.

Giving iOS 16 a chance

If you want to use the lock screen with the always-on display, you will need the latest version of Apple's mobile operating system. It is pre-installed on both the Pro and Pro Max. It is possible to use the always on lock screen with focus mode. Some of the new features were shown to the public.

Whenever I switch back to the iPad, I trip up a bit. I had to relearn some of my most used cross- platform apps after removing my back and home buttons. Overall, I found the experience less harrowing than I had thought it would be.

The existence of almost every single Google app in the Apple App Store means that I don't have to move to the other side of the world. I use the web links in the browsers on my mobile device to send and receive messages, as well as uploading my images to the internet. I change between Gboard and the default keyboard. I missed Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp, a game I have been playing for years. I wasn't going to start over with a new game on iOS because it doesn't work cross- platform.

I like how often I get asked if it's okay to do something. When Sister Wives is on, I install the app from the App Store because I am most active on it. I was relieved when I was asked if I wanted to revocation notification access because I forgot how many times the Reddit app chirps you. I think this sort of use case contributes to the fact that people are more willing to use Apple's mobile operating system than they are to useAndroid. It still depends on the user with a bit of expertise in navigating the software to be able to use it. It is easier for the system to remind you to take care of your privacy than it is to look through the settings panel.

Emergency — paging Apple!

At the Far Out Apple event, the company made a lot of emergency features. The new high-dynamic range gyro in the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max allows them to detect crashes. If you crash, the phone will light up and ask if you are ok. It will call out to emergency services if you don't respond.

The help it gets you is a little more advanced. You can access live people even if you don't have a cellular service with the custom antenna on the iPhone 14 Pro. Once a connection is established, Apple will dispatch you to one of its aids.

The Emergency SOS service will be free for two years for owners of the new Apple device. We don't know how much it will cost when it goes live, but it will be limited to the US and Canada. When this service goes live, it will be interesting to see how it is received by the public.

Worth the upgrade?

If you can afford the $1000 starting price for the Pro or $1099 for the Pro Max, you'll be able to get the best iPhones. It is possible to upgrade to a better device if you are on the iPhone 11 or 12.

You can justify it to yourself if you like, but if you are on the iPhone 13 Pro or Pro Max, you don't need to. There is no increase in performance between last-gen and current-gen when it comes to a new processor and camera sensor. The Apple Watch Series 8, second-gen Apple Watch SE, and Apple Watch Ultra have built-in safety features that are important if you want to venture out of the network or into the back woods.

I don't know if the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max are worth it to switch to a device other than the one you're currently using. We are waiting for the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro to come out. I will make a side-by-side comparison of the year's biggest flagship phones once they're all available. Don't let your guard down.
